Kevin Miller (Champ Flight) Mark Robinson (A Flight)
Greensboro, NC (March 27, 2010) - Clayton's Kevin Miller really likes Forest Oaks Country Club. For the second year in a row Miller walked away with the top spot in the Championship Flight in the season's 1st Major Tournament on the Egolf Tour. Miller improved his winning score from last year at the same venue by 4 strokes with a 70 that left him a comfortable 7 shots clear of 2nd place finisher Scott Corcoran of Raleigh. Miller thus became the first player in local Tour history to repeat as defending champ in a major event.
His victory, along with the winners of the other 3 flights contested, guaranteed him a spot in the end of season National Tour championships held at Hilton Head Island in October.
In A Flight action, 11-year Tour veteran Mark Robinson of Winston-Salem cruised to a 3-stroke win over Scott Mankins of Raleigh and Randleman's Bobby Elder. "I told you I was gonna break 80 today" said Robinson as he took his winner's trophy.
Part of playing in the Egolf system is having your Tour handicap watched closely to ensure parity in each flight. Lawsonville's Tate Rogers earned an immediate "battlefield promotion" with the 70 he posted today that blitzed the B Flight. Rogers dominated the 38-man flight, coming in 8 strokes clear of runners-up Jeffery Silver of Rocky Mount and Mike Groenewald of Morrisville.
Another Tour veteran, Mike Hawkins of Pittsboro got a promotion from C Flight to B Flight another way. "I said I was going to move up a flight with my next win" stated Hawkins after shooting an 88 for a one stroke advantage over a trio of golfers. "Next event, put me in the B Flight".
Finishing right behind Hawkins were Youngsville's Johnny Brooks, Sanford's Bill Bridges, and Doug Tompkins of Linden.
"The season's first Major drew a crowd of 114 golfers", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "When you're playing a quality course such as Forest Oaks, we expected a big field even though temperatures were in the low 30s at the scheduled start time. Once again it was great to see a mix of long term members competing with Tour newcomers".
