Fuquay-Varina, NC (August 6, 2011) - Raleigh's Tom Vasseur and Summerfield's Craig Johnson enjoyed the sweet taste of victory for the first time in their Golfweek Amateur Tour careers today at Bentwinds Country Club. Vasseur's win came in B Flight competition, while Johnson set the pace for the D Flighters. Both Tour members survived close calls in winding up on top.
Johnson won a card playoff for his win over cart-mate Tony Jenkins of Cary. Both posted even 100s during regulation play. Normally 1st place would have been determined in a sudden-death shoot-out on the course, but a combination of late hour, heat, and potential foul weather convinced the combatants to settle it by the cards.
Vasseur was 2-strokes clear of his closest rival - Winston-Salem's Jason Smith - 83 to 85 - for the B Flight crown. "It's great - winning your first one", said Vasseur, holding his 1st place trophy.
On the flip side of winning for the first time, Brad Morris' win in the A Flight competition was his second in-a-row, having emerged victorious last week at Devils Ridge CC in Holly Springs. His 74 was 2 shots clear of Youngsville's Bill Bowers.
The other 2 Flights - Championship and C, saw former Tour winners regain some of their glory from past years as both Tracey King of Selma (Champ Flight - 76) and Linden's Doug Tompkins (C Flight - 80) posted wins after fairly long dry spells. "In the past, these 2 guys were odds-on favorites everytime they teed it up", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "These scores today tell me they might be breaking out of their slumps of late, and they'll probably be factors again whenever they sign up to play".
