=============================== 2013 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR MAY 4, 2013 FOREST OAKS COUNTRY CLUB |
Forest Oaks Country Club
Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 to wide acclaim. It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, so in 2002, the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III's Love Design Group. Working with design associate Paul Cowley, Love answered the key concerns of his touring professionals. At the same time, Love brought his understanding of what was needed to balance the demands of tournament golf with the needs of building a members course. Greens so smooth, you'll want to remove your shoes. One thing professionals and members alike can both agree on the conditioning of the fairways and greens is superb. The fairways have bee re-sprigged with Tift Sport Bermuda grass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways can be cut lower and smoother than ever before. Forest Oaks is first and foremost a member's course, and that was the primary motivation in Love's redesign. Come play this great member's course that was home to the PGA for 10 years. Positions will go quickly. ============================================================== 14 YEAR OLD WINS PLAYOFF IN 1ST GOLFWEEK TOUR START Sanford, NC April 27, 2013 Fourteen-year old Scott Campbell of Greensboro made his Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour debut at Carolina Trace Country Club a successful one. Along with winning the A Flight in a sudden death playoff, he managed to hit his shot to within a few inches on the second closest-to-the-pin hole to capture that prize, and topped it off by winning a "Skin" in his flight's Skins Pool. Ironically, Campbell, after all the fine shots he hit all day, won his "sudden death" playoff with Rockingham's Todd Wallace (who was also playing in his 1st Tour event) with a double bogey on their 4th extra hole. Wallace encountered a problem coming out of the greenside bunker to kill any chance he had for the playoff win.
L to R) A Flight - Scott Campbell; B Flight - Tom Kubla; Championship Flight - Mark Macejko (photo unavailable) "We have a pretty famous local Tour Alumnus from Fayetteville, David Chung, who went on to play #1 for Stanford University, got to the Finals of the United States Amateur, and qualified for The Masters a few years back", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He also started in the A Flight with us when he was only 14 years old. He quickly graduated to Championship Flight and there was no holding him back. With Scott, we may have someone with the same potential". Pinehurst's Tom Kubla was the victor in the tightly contested B Flight with an 83 - 1 stroke ahead of Raleigh's Richard McMinis. Last week's winner, Steve Marinelli of Cary rounded out the top 3. In the C Flight, Fayetteville's Johnny Sears shot an 89 and enjoyed a 3 shot cushion over 2 golfers: Will Staten, also of Fayetteville, and Jamestown's James Snipes. Like his A Flight counterparts Campbell and Wallace, Snipes was also competing in his 1st Tour event.
(L to R) C Flight Johnny Sears; D Flight - Greg Dauscher The Championship Flight belonged to Mark Macejko of Vass who shot a 74, while Zebulon's Greg Dauscher stood alone in the D Flight with a 97. Next stop on the Golfweek Amateur Tour is at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, which for years hosted the Greater Greensboro Open on the PGA Tour. There are openings for that event. "Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold" Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them! Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind! Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly. It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons) It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!). It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!
Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf "When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #196 My ball lies under a tree with low hanging branches in an area through the green. True or False: A. If I take a practice swing I may not break any branches or knock off any leaves with my club even if their location is immaterial to my upcoming play of the ball. B. If I stand over the ball and test the area for my swing, not intending to hit the ball, I must be careful not to improve the area of my swing for the actual stroke. C. During the backward movement of my club, intending to make a stroke, I knock off some leaves and break a small branch. There is no penalty provided I continue and make a stroke. D. During the backward movement of my club, intending to make a stroke, I knock off some leaves and break a small branch. There is no penalty if I abort the stroke. Answer A is FALSE. I may take practice swings, and if I happened to accidentally break a branch or knock off leaves in the process, there is no penalty provided I have done nothing to improve the area of my swing or line of play. (R13-2) B is TRUE. If the player accidentally knocks of a few leaves in the process of testing for his actual swing, provided there are many leaves to begin with and the loss of a couple of leaves did not materially change the challenge he faces, there is no penalty. (R13-2, and Decision 13-2/0.5) C is TRUE and D is FALSE. These deal with the same problem and if the stroke is continued, there is no penalty, but if the stroke is aborted (no stroke) there is a loss of hole/ 2-stroke penalty. The aborted stroke is treated the same as if it were a practice swing. (R13-2)=============================================== |
Tour Weather Guidelines: Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
