Mike Germain of Raleigh defeats Rus Rilling in "Sudden Daeth Playoff"
Lexington, NC (May 30, 2009) - Raleigh's Mike Germain has worked in construction his entire adult life, so he's not unaccustomed to occasionally putting in some overtime. He's taken that practice to an extreme as a member of the C Flight on the Egolf Amateur Golf Tour this season.
For the third event in a row, Germain has been deadlocked for the top score in the flight after regulation play. Such was the case today at Sapona Country Club, and for the third week in a row that has required extra "sudden-death" holes to determine a winner.
Germain had split his first two playoffs at Carolina Trace CC in Sanford and Mill Creek GC in Mebane, losing the first and winning the second. He would emerge victorious today over Madison's Rus Rilling with a par on the 3rd extra hole. The players had finished regulation play with a pair of 86s.
"Mike has assured me he won't be in a C Flight playoff at The Challenge in next week's event", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He's made the decision to move up to the B Flight for future Tour competition". " I know I can win against those guys as well", stated Germain.
Todd Hunsucker of Asheboro posted the lowest score in the event while winning the Championship Flight with an even par round of 71 that included 5 birdies. High Point's Dan Holland finished 2-back with a 73. "I could have been a little more consistent", said Hunsucker.
Winston-Salem's Brian Yokley was the sole member of the A Flight to break 80 as his 78 also gave him a 2-stroke margin of victory over Greensboro's Al Matthews, and allowed him to claim his second victory of the 2009 season.
In the B Flight, (which played from the shorter "Green Tees") Cary's Carl Hill stunned the entire field with a 76. Hill, who plays a full schedule "on-Tour", entered today's event with a certified Tour handicap of 16.2, and an average tournament score of 92. He improved 15 strokes from his last Tour effort at Mill Creek GC.
"Carl really displayed some excellent course management today", said playing partner Ted Pauling of Raleigh. Hillsborough's Jim McLean was runner-up with a 77.
