Mebane, NC (May 17, 2008) – If you were going to pick a time to get your 1st career hole-in-one, you might want to get it playing “on-Tour†in a Major event, on the closest to the pin hole, and when you’re in the skins pool. That’s exactly what Pittsboro’s Charles Powell, playing in the C Flight, accomplished Saturday in the Egolf Amateur Tour event at Mill Creek GC. His solidly struck 5-iron never left the pin on the par 3, 13th hole which was playing to 168 yards.
The ball hit short, took one hop, and eased up towards the hole. “I thought it was hidden behind the flagstickâ€, said Powell. His playing partners however, thought it went in – they were right.
The ace helped Powell to an overall 89 and third place points for the Raleigh division of the C Flight. In addition Powell won a framed, double matted picture of the hole with a plaque commemorating the feat, along with a 3-day golf vacation to any one of 150 resort locations across North America which goes to any Egolf member who scores a hole-in-one during Tour play.
The hole-in-one wasn’t the only remarkable aspect of C Flight play during the event. For the second time in the last month, a new record score was posted in the flight. Greensboro’s Chris Vetrone fired a 78 for a 5-stroke win over Durham’s Daren Green. Vetrone, like Bill Hornbaker who shot a 79 to set the old record, will be moving his game to the B Flight for future Tour events.
It took Greensboro’s Bob Gardner 2 extra holes of playoff golf to grab the top spot in the A Flight from Burlington’s Gary Roberson. Both fired regulation 77s. 2 straight pars on the playoff holes were enough to seal the victory for Gardner.
Keith McDaniel of Mebane also shot a 77 to take 1st place in the Championship Flight. The Championship boys however, were playing from the Gold Tees and spotted the rest of the field almost 700 yards. “They played a totally different golf course from back thereâ€, stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
In the B Flight, Raleigh’s Richard McMinis prevailed with a one shot win over Pinehurst’s David Randall – 82 to 83.
