The Legacy Golf Links winners!
Aberdeen, NC – (January 26, 2008) - Chilly temperatures greeted 113 golfers at The Legacy Golf Links today as The egolf Amateur Golf Tour and The Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour got off to a flying start on the 2008 season. Due to a heavy cloud cover, conditions didn’t change much as the round progressed. However, a number of Tour members posted mid-season scores despite the cold.
In the Championship Flight Gene Queen of Advance and Charlotte’s Dave Schmidt, playing from the 7,018 yard back tees, both shot 1-over 73s to tie for the top spot in the Flight. Queen survived the playoff on the 432 yard, par 4, 18th hole, acknowledged as one of the toughest finishing holes in the entire Pinehurst area. Schmidt had a tough time on the hole, finishing with a double bogey, while Queen’s 5 was enough to take the win.
Two Greensboro golfers finished 1 – 2 in the A Flight as Tim Thilo edged Eddie Trent by a single stroke with a 75. Both played from shorter tees than the Championship boys.
Chris Hensley of Wake Forest was the only B Flight member to break 80, and he managed that feat by the narrowest of margins with a 79. That single stoke was all that separated him from Winston-Salem’s Butch Clark, who was competing in his first Tour event.
Another Tour “rookie†who enjoyed great success Saturday was Burlington’s Jerry Weldon. He not only won his inaugural event “on-Tourâ€, but his 82 enabled him to be the only Harris Teeter Senior Tour member to take home a victory at The Legacy. Clayton’s Paul Haydon shot his best score in 26 Tour events over the last two years to capture 2nd with an 83.
One of the fun features of this event, which is the only one all season that is comprised of both Harris Teeter Senior Tour members as well as egolf Tour guys, is the team competition between the two Tours. To figure a winner in this contest, the scores of the top two finishers in each flight from both of the respective Tours are added, with the lowest total emerging with “bragging rights†for the entire season. In an unprecedented result, the team competition wound up in a tie, with the 8 best scores used to calculate a winner adding up to exactly 633 strokes for each of the Tours!
“Because of the tie, I’m going to put an extra $100.00 into the skins pool of each Tour at their first regular season eventâ€, said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. “These guys played too hard in pretty tough conditions to not be rewarded in some way for their effortsâ€.
