Cross Creek Flight Winners (George Tsiolkas-David McGunigal-David Schmanke-Cuong Ton)
Mount Airy, NC (April 25, 2009) - In three of the four Flights contested Saturday during the Egolf Amateur Golf Tour event held at Cross Creek Country Club, victory was decided by a single stroke. In the fourth flight the margin of victory was also close with the winner prevailing by only 2 strokes.
The "blow-out" 2-stroke winner was David Schmanke of Apex who emerged victorious in the B Flight with an 81 edging Thomasville's Nick Terry. Schmanke somewhat offset a triple bogey 8 on the 17th hole by posting two birdies on his back-nine score to maintain his margin of victory.
In the Championship Flight an eagle and three birdies was not quite enough to offset the triple bogey registered on the par-5, 11th hole by Mike Crawford. Crawford was nipped by Winston-Salem's George Tsiolkas who posted an even par 72 for the one-stroke win.
David McGunigal of Walnut Cove took top honors in the A Flight with a single stroke win over Hillsborough's Tom Freeland, 77 to 78. McGunigal, who had a rough start score-wise "on-Tour" this season, considered a move back to the B Flight prior to this event, which would have been allowed due to his Tour Handicap rating. However, he decided to stick it out in "A" and proved that he made the right decision with this win. "Now I'm glad I didn't make that move", said McGunigal.
In the C Flight, Greensboro's Cuong Ton edged two golfers, Clemmons' Jack Frazier and Reidsville's Ray Schenkel by a single stroke, 87 to 88 to walk away with the "W".
Somewhat obscured by the close exciting finishes in each of the Flights was the fact that Winston-Salem's Bob Webber registered his first career "ace" with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 14th hole, which was playing to 142 yards. Due to gusting winds, the long-hitting Webber hit a "knock-down" 7-iron into the cup for his moment in the sun.
