6 HOLE PLAYOFF DETERMINES GOLFWEEK TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT WINNER
Fuquay-Varina, NC
May 12, 2012
Fayetteville's James Prasse and Neal Faulkner of Gibsonville got to play some free golf in the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour event contested at Bentwinds Country Club. After finishing regulation play with identical 73s in the Championship Flight, they headed back out for a sudden death playoff that proved to be anything but sudden. After matching scores on the first 5 extra holes, their bonus golf came to an end with a "kick-in" birdie by Prasse on their 6th playoff hole.
Faulkner did get some good news however after getting "nipped" in the playoff. He won one of the Closest-to-The-Pin prizes available and also held up for a "skin" in the optional Skins Pool.
Raleigh's Paul Harmon kept a streak going for the Golfweek Tour and it's sister - The Senior Amateur Tour by registering a hole-in-one. It was the third consecutive event in which an ace has been scored. Last week Terry Evans of Apex knocked one in at The Meadowlands Golf Club during the Saturday Golfweek event, while Advance's Dawson Strider holed one out with the Seniors on Thursday at Sapona Country Club in Lexington.
Harmon used an 8-iron on the 15th hole for the 157 yard shot. "We didn't see it go in" said playing partner Bill Berry, who had earlier put one on the green tight. "When we got to the green and only saw one ball, we knew one of us was in the cup". It was the B Flighter's 5th career "ace".
While all that excitement was going on, Godwin's Jay Yergeau steadied out a 79 to take top honors in the B Flight. He was 1 stroke clear of Raleigh's Brannon Lambert and Greensboro's Robin Gomez.
Bentwinds Winners (Left to Right)
A Flight -Jon Blum; B Flight - Jay Yergeau;
C Flight - Rob Bulgarino; D Flight - George Greer
Jon Blum of Tampa has won numerous times "on-Tour" and his 76 today in the A Flight did the trick again, besting Raleigh's Rob Reynolds by 3 shots.
The two other flight winners enjoyed their initial Tour triumphs: Rob Bulgarino of Raleigh in the C Flight, and Fayetteville's George Greer in the D Flight.
Bulgarino was a "walk-over" winner over Wake Forest's Darien Upchurch, who left after posting the same 86 as Bulgarino. By Upchurch not being available to play it out on the course, Rob got his 1st Tour win.
Tour veteran George Greer has been posting some nice scores this season, and has been "in-the-money" on a number of occasions, but had never brought home a first place trophy - that is until today. "George has been with us a long time, noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Up to this point, his finest moment 'on-Tour' was taking a 7th place finish in the National Tour Finals at Hilton Head. Now he's got a win under his belt as well". His 87 was a comfortable 10 strokes clear of Fayetteville's Ricky Tate.
Next stop for the Golfweek Tour is the season's 2nd Major Championship at Mill Creek GC in Mebane.
Double points for all competitors and automatic qualification to the National Tour Finals for all flight winners helps make this one of the biggest and most important events of the year. There are still spots open, contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 to guarantee entry.
