Greensboro, NC (August 1, 2009) - Randleman's Bobby Elder was "licking his chops" in the Egolf Tour event played at Bryan Park's Players Course today. Playing the second hole of his sudden-death playoff with Raleigh's Rob Reynolds for the A Flight crown, he had found the green on the 491-yard par-5 in 2 and sat only 20 feet or so for an eagle and an apparent victory. After Reynolds came up 40 yards short with his 2nd shot, he had reason to be confident. But golf has a funny way of turning things around quickly.
"When he (Reynolds) hit his wedge to the green, I thought that's gonna be close", said Elder. "Then all of a sudden - boom! - it goes in the hole for an eagle". Elder failed to convert his eagle putt, making Reynolds the flight winner after both had posted 77s on their original 18 holes of play.
"That's the first time we've ever had someone hole out their last shot from the fairway to win an event" said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "It's pretty tough when you make a natural birdie on a playoff hole and lose".
In other flight action, Fairmont's Tad Wood used a front side 34 to propel him to an even-par 72 overall and a 1-shot victory in the Championship Flight over Bobby Elder's son Brock. "Playing the full length of the course at 7,057 yards, as these guys did, 72 is a heckuva score" quipped Hallenbeck.
Winston-Salem's Chris Wilkes had a 74, good for a 4-shot win over 2nd place finisher Bob Sheahan of Apex in the B Flight. Chris' score also pushed his Tour handicap into A Flight range for his next event.
Jason Smith, also of Winston, managed to nip Eden's Mike Zoeller by one stroke for the C Flight Championship with an 82.
