Greensboro, NC (August 13, 2011) - Many Golfweek Amateur Tour members weren't even sure that there was going to be a Tour event run today at Grandover Resort on the West Course because of heavy rains that were falling this morning. Despite these ominous signs, a full field of 92 golfers showed up for the event on one of Greensboro's premier courses. After a relatively short delay due to the early rains, the event was played in it's entirety without so much as a single raindrop falling on the field. The cart rule for the day was even 90 degrees!
Both Lewisville's Burt Flowers and Fayetteville's Kelvin Farmer took full advantage of the opportunity to play by earning their first career Tour victories in the B and C Flights respectively. They also both won by the narrowest margin of victory - a single stroke. Flowers edged out 4 fellow competitors by that margin with his 82, while Farmer bettered 2 Tour members with his 86.
While Flowers and Farmer were enjoying their first taste of Tour victory, High Point's Dan Holland took his 7th win of the year in stride with a 73 that included only a single birdie. "It was pretty much just paring every hole", commented Holland afterwards. "Dan's had 2 victory streaks of 3-in-a-row this year along with this single", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He's definitely Mr. Consistency as far as Tour play goes".
Kenny Smith of Randleman and Clemmons' David Flanagan have won before "on-Tour", and did so again today. Smith, who shot a 75, was aided in his A Flight win by an eagle-3 on the 510 yard 16th hole. "I was just off the edge in 2 and managed to knock it in" explained Smith. Smith, like Flowers in the B Flight, had 4 golfers come in right behind him.
Flanagan edged last week's winner of the D Flight, Craig Johnson, by 2 strokes with his 93. Six of the 17 flight competitors managed to break 100. "Best D Flight showing of the year" said Hallenbeck.
