2013 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
June 29, 2013
Pinewood Country Club
-----
|
This private course offers enough variety of terrain to challenge all of the flights within the tour. There are trees and water hazards that come into play throughout the course. However good scores can be had - just look at the defending flight winners from last year.
Over twelve years ago, the course underwent several changes. "If you played the course then, you noticed that a pretty good shot near the middle of some fairways would sometimes take an erratic bounce and roll into the rough. Many fairways were too high in the middle, sloped too severely to the sides. They fixed that and also did some mounding on the sides along with some waste bunkering to alleviate some good-shots-gone-bad situations.
In addition, they reshaped the greens areas and put in some bunkers to catch errant shots that would ordinarily be in deep trouble."Plus, they redid the greens and installed A-1. Pinehurst No. 8 has that grass, and it was put in at Pinehurst No. 2 during their recent renovation. The signature hole is #8, a 215-yard, par 3 from the back tees, requiring a tee shot over water.
You should enjoy this course for its challenge to your game and the fact it was recently rated 4 stars by the Triad Golf Panel. What a treat.
In the last 5 Years, Pinewood has hosted the following events:
- 2007 Wyndham Championship Qualifying for PGA Tour
- 2008 US Senior Open Qualifying
- 2009 NC Mid-Amateur
- 2010 US Junior Qualifying
- 2011 US Amateur Qualifying
- 2011 NGA Hooters Tour Tournament

2 JUNE GOLFWEEK TOUR WINS FOR GREENSBORO'S TON
Pinehurst, NC
June 22, 2013
Cuong Ton of Greensboro was a long-time B Flight participant on the Golfweek Amateur Tour. His solid play improved his Tour handicap to the level that he was promoted the A Flight late last year. Like most Tour players who receive a move up in flight, it took Ton a while to get used to playing at the higher level (he opened the 2013 season with a 94 at The Legacy). Those struggles seem far removed now as Ton recorded his second June win "on-Tour" today at The National Golf Club.
Ton opened the month with a runaway victory at Bermuda Run West firing a 71. He toured the 6,545 yard National layout with a 3-over 75 today to barely edge both Raeford's Ben Stonestreet and Hope Mills' Ryan Hair by a single shot. "Cuong shows up at almost every event we run", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "The improvement in his game has been very obvious from when he started 'on-Tour'. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy".
Further drama was provided in the Championship and B Flights, both of which required sudden-death playoffs to determine a winner. Raleigh's Anthony Mann took the Champ Flight title from Chip Collins of Hope Mills with a 2-putt birdie on the 1st playoff hole - the 481 yard, par-5, 10th. Both players had posted regulation scores of 73.
In the B Flight, Hillsborough's Jim McLean got his win on the same hole over Raeford's Marcus Dudley after both finished 18 holes with 80s.
Oxford's Charlie Brodie was 3 shots clear of Fayetteville's Johnny Sears for the C Flight crown. They were the only 2 flight members to break 90.
Elvis Sheahan enjoyed his first career Tour win in the D Flight with a 107 and a comfortable 4 shot margin over Greensboro's Keith Thomas.
The next event "on-Tour" is the 2013 season's 3rd Major at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro. There are spots still available for that event on June 29.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"
Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!
Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf
EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!
Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.
-
It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)
-
It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).
-
It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!
Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf
"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Questions from week #205
Here are four different situations in match play where opponents end up playing holes in their match in other than the required sequence.
1. The match is suspended after 14 holes because of darkness. When they restart the match the opponents agree they must replay the entire match starting with #1., disregarding the status of the match at the time it was suspended.
2. Opponents agree to skip two holes (11 and 12) because of approaching darkness and conclude the match based upon the holes played.
3. At the conclusion of the match the opponents learn they mistakenly played three holes out of sequence.
4. Opponents mistakenly play three holes out of sequence and then realize their error, nullify the results of those three holes and return and replay the same three holes in the correct sequence. They base the outcome of the match upon the results of the second play of those three holes.
For which of the above four situations should the competitors be disqualified?
Answers:
There are certainly some different Rules for Match Play vs. Stroke Play. One Rule that applies universally to both forms of play is players must not agree to waive or ignore a Rule of Golf. (R1-3)
1. Generally speaking, ignorance of the Rules in Match Play is typically overlooked by the Committee. In our case, restarting the entire match is not an agreement to waive a Rule of Golf, they just didn’t know any better. Assuming ignorance of the Rules, the players involved in our match would not be disqualified and the results of the match would be determined by the outcome of the match as replayed.
2. The players involved in the match would be disqualified for agreeing to waive a Rule of Golf (R1-3). The match consists of a stipulated round (R2-1), which requires the holes to be played in their correct sequence unless otherwise authorized by the Committee. (Def: Stipulated Round).
3. Not disqualified. This was not an agreement to waive a Rule of Golf as they were unaware at the time they had played the holes out of sequence. The results of the match stand as played.
4. Not disqualified. Once again, the players did what they thought best. The results of the match stand as played using the replayed holes.
As long as the members of a match do not lodge an official complaint or are not concluding a match under protest, provided there is no agreement to waive a Rule of Golf, the results of a match will usually stand as the players agreed. (For more see D2-1/5)

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
