2014 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, JULY 19, 2014
PINEHURST #9
(FORMERLY, NATIONAL GOLF CLUB)
----
|
===============================================================
Hole #2, Par 3 - 191 Yds (from the back tees)
Pinehurst has added a new course to their stable, a championship layout, the former National Golf Club, now known as Pinehurst No.9.
The design is a Jack Nicklaus Signature layout of 7,122 yards, 75.5/138, course/slope from the back tees with four shorter tees, and is one challenging layout. It’s reminiscent of Nicklaus’ layouts with generous fairways, strategic bunkering and water features with undulating greens over slightly rolling hills.
"The National property is absolutely beautiful. Its rolling hills, magnificent pines and variety of lakes provided us with elements we needed to design a golf course that would be extra special. The idea has been to preserve and build upon the great golfing tradition which is the Sandhills." - Jack Nicklaus
Legendary in his golf achievements and golf course designs alike, Jack Nicklaus constructed a masterpiece set amidst the long leaf pines of Southern Pines. This 18-hole championship layout will test your mind and your true golfing ability.
There’s plenty of room off the tee, the real challenge is on and around the greensites with severe sloping and undulations with significant collection areas. The back 9 winds through some rolling hills with magnolia, azalea, and dogwood tree lined fairways, and is more challenging than the more straightforward front.
Each hole at Pinehurst No. 9 is unique and isolated, and provides various options and strategies to the hole and par. The course is visually stunning with the tall pines, grassy swales, groomed waste areas and a variety of lakes and stream, and well landscaped throughout.
Expect your peers to have already signed-up.

"Can't Complete the Low Round?
"Improve Your Golf Mental Toughness"
Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!
Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf
EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!
Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.
-
It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)
-
It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).
-
It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!
Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf
"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life, you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FOR GOLFWEEK ROOKIE AT PINEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB
Asheboro, NC
June 28, 2014
Photos By Rob Andrews
Sumner Tate of Raleigh got his Golfweek Tour career off to a great start today at Pinewood Country Club. The Championship Flight member not only fired a 1-under 71 for a victory in his first Tour start, but due to the fact that this event was a Major Championship, he also earned himself a spot in the year ending National Championship event in Hilton Head this fall. "That's great, 'cause I really want to compete in that", said Tate.
Tate was 1 shot clear of High Point's Dan Holland for the win due in large part to hitting the fairways consistently. Tate explained "Because I was in the fairway on most holes, I hit some pretty good approach shots. Three of my birdies were tap-ins".
Pinewood Winners: A Flight - Hollis Peery
Championship Flight: Sumner Tate (not shown)
A one stroke win is close, but three of the other four flights were even closer, being settled with sudden-death extra hole playoffs. Hollis Peery and Woody Bullard, both from Fayetteville, finished their A Flight rounds with 76s. Peery emerged the winner in the playoff. It was a good day for Peery who collected $610.00 in Prizes for the day.
Pinewood Winners (L to R) C Flight - Jason Beeson
B Flight: Steve Marinelli
Mebane's Steve Marinelli was the class of the B Flight with his playoff win over Fayetteville's Lanzo Wallace, while the D Flight king turned out to be Elvis Sheahan of Durham. He likewise took an extra hole to edge Richland, VA's Greg Dotson after both carded regulation 95s.
Pinewood Winner: D Flight - Elvis Sheahan
The only other player to gain an automatic invitation to the Nationals was Jason Beeson of Clemmons. He had a relatively comfortable 4 shot win over Fayetteville's Johnny Sears as the only C Flight player to break 90 with an 89.
The Tour will be taking the next two weeks off, returning to play at Pinehurst #9 (formerly The National) on July 19. There are spots available for that event.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow stakes. He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard.
He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a steep slope. After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time. Nate then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water.
Nate moves back about four yards into the fairway, keeping the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft turf. When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the flag.
So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2 yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white line. Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops. This time the ball remains where it was dropped. He hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to complete the play of the hole.
In stroke play, how many penalty strokes did Nate just incur?
A. 4
B. 6
C. 7
D. 9
===============================================
Answer:
C. 7
1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2 penalty strokes.
2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same Rule, related acts, single penalty. This could also be construed as testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered related acts and single breach. See Decision 1-4/12)
3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = 1 penalty stroke.
4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded = 2 penalty strokes. When he first dropped the ball, it was in play. He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of the relief procedure from R26-1. He is taking relief for an embedded ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come up. When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place (R20-7). Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25.
I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use the DZ as intended. Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than part of the area through the green. When he dropped the ball in this area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2. Thus when the ball rolled closer to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c). So what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was probably doing it for the wrong reason.
If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course. The special dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.)
Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
