Fuquay- Varina, NC (March 12, 2011) - High Point's Dan Holland actually had to birdie hole #1 twice at Crooked Creek GC today to win the Championship Flight of the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour event. After scoring a birdie on hole number 1 to start his day, Holland found himself in a tie with Raleigh's Lance Jordan after 18 holes were finished. He and Jordan headed out to hole #1 again to commence their sudden-death playoff.
Holland made short work of the playoff as he registered his 2nd birdie of the day on the 1st hole to secure the victory. It was Holland's 2nd Tour triumph.
The D Flight also provided some playoff drama as Greg Green of Apex calmly sank a 10 footer on his 2nd playoff hole and then watched as The Tidewater Tour's John Hall missed from about 2 feet to hand Green his first Tour win. "It's been awhile coming" said Green. "I'm gonna make sure I don't drop this trophy".
The 3rd playoff of the day was a 3-man affair between Fayetteville's Kevin Hamilton, Bill Berry of Garner, and Mark Cobb out of Hope Mills. All 3 finished regulation play with 80s. Cobb was eliminated on the 1st playoff hole, while it took 3 holes for Hamilton to edge Berry for the win. A Tour "rookie", this was Hamilton's 1st Tour victory as well.
Tom Handy of Fuquay-Varina, who actually works occasionally at Crooked Creek, used his local knowledge to good advantage as his 80 was one stroke clear of Castalia's Roger Sullivan and Dunn's Johnnie Baggett in B Flight competition. Handy, who is a Senior Amateur Golf Tour regular, used his option to compete against the young guys and did the "old-timers" proud.
Youngsville's Johnny Brooks continued his strong play of late in the C Flight edging Apex' Landon Wilkes 88 to 89 for the top spot in the flight. Raleigh's Brent Hanes, last week's winner at Bryan Park, finished with a 90 for 3rd place.
"The Tour season is just starting to get underway", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Any amateur golfer interested in competing with us this season can call me at 336-495-6556, or email me at behgolf@aol.com. We have new members starting up every week with the Tour".
