CAREER LOW ROUND SCORES GOLFWEEK TOUR WIN Bermuda Run, NC June 1, 2013 Greensboro's Cuong Ton has been a member of the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour for the past 6 years. During that time he has played in as many events as any other Tour member. Almost every Saturday finds him on the course playing against the other A Flight competitors "on Tour". He produced his best Tour score ever at Bermuda Run West Country Club, posting a 71 to take home the Tour trophy that comes with a victory. He did a little more than hold his own. "When Cuong started with us, he was a B Flight member", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "After we moved him up to the A Flight a few years back he never complained. Just went out and played as hard as he could. It's great to see him post a number like he did today". Ton edged another player who also posted his best Tour result ever in this, his rookie season. Lewisville's Bruce Gee was 2 strokes back of Ton with a 73. No stranger to winning "on-Tour", Advance's Gene Queen garnered his second Tour win at this venue with a 72 in the Championship Flight. (It should be noted that the Championship Flight played from tees that were about 400 yards longer than those of the other flights). "Gene just keeps rolling along", said Hallenbeck. "He's a factor in virtually every event in which he plays". Queen's margin of victory was also 2 shots. Greensboro's Jared Jewett posted the 74. While 7 players were within 2 strokes of the lead in the B Flight, not one of them managed to break 80. Greensboro's Scotty Lewis hit that number "on-the-nose" for the win, edging Boone's Robbie Brinkley and Hillsborough's Jim McLean by a single stroke. While competition was tight in the Champ, A, and B Flights, it was more of a runaway in both the C and D Flights as the winners of both groups produced 8 shot wins over their closest pursuers. Howard Williams of High Point had an 84 in the C Flight to beat both Landon Wilkes of Apex and Summerfield's Craig Johnson by that 8 stroke margin. Greensboro's Keith Thomas enjoyed that same cushion in the D Flight over Greg Green of Apex, being the only flight member to break 100 with his 96. The next stop for the Golfweek Tour will be at Little River Resort in Carthage on June 8. There are a number of spots available for any amateur golfer to play in that event. If interested, call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or email him at behgolf@aol.com. Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #201 Brad is playing in a stroke play event and on the 6th hole hits his tee ball towards an area filled with native grass mounds. After exhausting his five minute search period, and not finding his ball, Brad returns to the tee, where the trailing group is waiting. He apologizes for the delay and quickly tees another ball. In his haste to catch up, Brad nearly whiffs the ball and only manages to move it a couple of feet towards the hole. Now both humiliated and anxious to get out of the way, Brad retrieves the ball, re-tees it and manages to hit a nice drive down the middle. Brad takes three more strokes to complete play of the hole. What score must Brad record for the 6th hole? A. 6 B. 7 C. 8 D. 9
Answer C. Brad scored 8 on the hole. Brad lost his first ball off the tee and thus was hitting three from the tee when he returned to the teeing ground. His near whiff (third stroke) left the ball only a short distance away. Rather than play that ball as it lay, Brad chose to re-tee a third time. That means he again played under stroke and distance, thus was hitting five from the tee. Adding three more strokes he took to hole out, his total is 8. You may be wondering why there is no additional penalty under R18-2a, (Ball at Rest Moved by Player). When Brad returned to the tee to hit his third stroke and barely moved the ball, it is true this ball was in play. Had somebody in the group behind, who were standing around the tee, informed Brad when he lifted that ball that he should replace it; and, had he done so, he would have incurred a 1-stroke penalty. But that didn’t happen. Instead Brad returned to the teeing ground and re-teed, and the only Rule that could apply to this situation is R27-1, Stroke and Distance. Whenever a player chooses to play under stroke and distance, he can substitute a ball or use his original ball. There is no penalty for lifting the original ball when proceeding under stroke and distance. =============================================== |
Tour Weather Guidelines: Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
