AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

4th MAJOR
ANDERSON CREEK
GOLF CLUB
----
|
|
===============================================================
As the
4th Major Tournament of the year you should be reminded that double
points are awarded to all who play and flight winners get their
cards punched as automatic invitees to the National Championship at
the season ending tournament.
Anderson
Creek was designed by Davis Love III, and is his first signature
course in North Carolina.
Anderson
Creek was rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest in 2008 and was the
winner of the "Best New Course in NC" award for 2001.
This traditional layout reflects all that is great about golf in
the Sandhills – rolling fairways lined with longleaf pines, natural
areas highlighted with love grass.
The
greens’ large roll-off areas and significant undulations offer a
challenge to those who miss their approach shot to the
greens.
Low
scores are attainable in all flights but this course will bite if
you blink. Plus, all of you should be playing your best game
now anyway.

FAYETTEVILLE'S
HARDEE DOMINATES GOLFWEEK EVENT AT CAROLINA TRACE
Sanford,
NC
August
16, 2014
Over 80%
of the entire field played from tees that were close to 600 yards
shorter than that of Championship
Flight member Larry Hardee of Fayetteville in the Golfweek
Amateur Tour event held at Carolina Trace.
Despite
that fact, Hardee
managed to emerge as the class of the field with a 3-stroke scoring
margin on every other player in the field. Playing on
the Lake Course at the Trace facility, only 3 golfers competing were
even that close. One of those was Sanford's Craig Sturdivant, another
Championship Flight stalwart who came in second.
"Both Larry and Craig are factors every time they
'tee-it-up' with us", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
"These guys both got game and hopefully will be our 'horses' at
the National Championship event in Hilton Head later this year".
The other
2 players just 3 back of Hardee were Hope Mills' Ryan Hair
and Fayetteville's Hollis Peery who finished tied for the top spot in
the A
Flight. It took 2 holes of sudden-death playoff to
determine a winner with Hair edging Peery for the trophy.
Playing
in only his second Tour event, Pinehurst's
Dan Staheli took the top spot in the B Flight. His 83
was 3 shots clear of a threesome - Mebane's Steve Marinelli,
Raleigh's Richard McMinis, and Fayetteville's Will Staten.
James Eatmon's shot a
92 for the C
Flight crown. The Sims resident was 1
stroke clear of Raleigh's Greg Dauscher.
In the D Flight
the "magic number" was 100. That was the winning score
posted by Denis
Meyer of Apex. In fairness, Mayer would have broken
the 100 barrier had he not incurred a 2 stroke penalty for hitting
off an incorrect tee box. Chase Groom of Raleigh and Fayetteville's
Bernard Broadnax were 2 back of Meyer.
The next
Golfweek event is the season's final Major Championship at Anderson
Creek Golf Club in Spring Lake. There are spots still available for
that event on August 23.

SOGGY EVENT FOR PGA AND GOLFWEEK TOUR AT SOUTHERN PINES
Southern
Pines, NC
August 9,
2014
While the
Pros at the PGA Championship were having their problems with the rain
this weekend, so were the Golfweek Amateur Tour members who tee'd it
up in the Southern Pines Country Club event.
Steady
rain plagued the event throughout, but a few intrepid golfers managed
to keep their grips dry and turn in some solid scores, led by Championship Flight
mainstay Larry Hardee from Fayetteville. His even par
71 was the class of the field. Chapel Hill's Henry Lister was 3 back
for his second consecutive runner-up finish in as many weeks.
Fayetteville's Hollis Peery managed to hold off Durham's Daren Green in the A Flight
competition by a single stroke. He was the only flight member to
break 80 in the tough conditions with a 79.
Southern
Pines Flight Winners
The B Flight
played from tees that were almost 300 yards shorter than their A
Flight counterparts, which helped Whitsett's Greg Martin to
finish with a 78 and a 3-shot margin of victory over three players:
Pinehurst's Tom Kubla, Stokesdale's J. Combs, and Raleigh's Mike
Groom.
Tour
veteran Howard
Williams of High Point had a comfortable 4-stroke
margin over Durham's Elvis Sheahan in capturing the C Flight
crown with an 84, while Raleighs
Chase Groom was D Flight boss with a 97 - 2 clear of
Piney Point, MD's Mike Charles.

The 2014 Golfweek Amateur Tour
National Championship dates have been announced. The 54 hole
tournament will be played from Oct 17-19, 2014 on eight courses in
Hilton Head, SC.
Here Are the 2014 Point Standings By Tour
Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour
Triad Tour Point Standings
There are
only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament -
win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 10 point earners in
your flight.
As you
plot your tour schedule be cognizant of the fact, only the top 10 are
guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and
depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you
participate in during 2014.
Do you
know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you
will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your
automatic invitation? Don't be left out.

Rules Review
It has
been suggested that there should be a series of Rules
scenarios for you to solve. So begins
a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share
these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include
one each week. You should try to determine the answer based
upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your
Rule book to confirm.
There will
be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question
from week #213
James is
playing a par 5. His second stroke landed in an area of the fairway
where a sprinkler line leak from a couple weeks back saturated the
ground, preventing the greenkeeper from mowing the area. As a result
the grass has grown up thick and quite dense and the entire area that
has yet to be mowed is marked as ground
under repair.
The spot
of James’s ball within this area is unknown. Using his wedge and foot
James moves the grass around searching for his ball. In one of his
sweeps, his foot moves a ball out from its hiding place. It is his
ball.
James
lifts and replaces the ball on its original spot, intending to play
the ball as it lies. He then changes his mind, lifts his ball again
and after cleaning it proceeds to drop it within one club-length of
the nearest point of relief from the GUR, no closer to the hole.
He then
hits this ball onto the putting green and takes two putts to hole
out.
James’s
score for this hole is:
A. 5
B. 6
C. 7
D. 8
Answer
A. James
made 5, a par.
If a
player is searching for his ball in deep grass anywhere on the
course, and he moves the ball, he must replace the ball (R12-1). This
Rule further states if the ball is moved, the player is penalized one
stroke under R18-2a except as provided in clauses a-d of R12-1.
For our
situation, clause 12-1d comes to the rescue and informs if we are
searching for a ball in an abnormal ground condition, of which Ground
Under Repair is, if we accidentally move the ball during the search,
there is no penalty. The ball must be replaced or the player may
proceed under R25-1b.
The very
last sentence also informs if the player chose to replace the ball,
he may change his mind and decide to proceed with relief without
penalty. Thus, James took five strokes to complete the play of the
hole.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily,
we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the
course is open, we're going to play.
The
only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's
way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. -
lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In
other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing
where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because
I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time
and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that
to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the
event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to
take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not
get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are
expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
Bruce
