Sapona CC Winners!
Lexington, NC (March 8, 2008) - Swirling winds with gusts up to 45 mph, wet fairways, and rapidly dropping temperatures greeted Egolf Tour members at Sapona CC Saturday in the second event of the 2008 season. The course itself is also one of the most challenging the players face all year. As might be expected, scores reflected the tough conditions. Only one person in the entire field managed to break 80, and he accomplished that feat by the slimmest of margins with a 79. If you shot 100 in the C Flight, you finished only 2 strokes out of 3rd place.
The lone sub 80 round belonged to James Goin of Winston-Salem in the Championship Flight. He didn't run away with the win however, as Greensboro's Tod Dauler and Winston's Bryan Sepich were only 1 and 2 strokes back respectively with an 80 and 81. Goin has enjoyed success at Sapona on-Tour in the past, with two 2nd place finishes to his credit.
Wake Forest’s Chris Hensley, who had dominated the B Flight in the first two events of the year, prompting him to be “bumped-up†into the A Flight for this event, wasn’t the least bit intimidated by the tougher competition as his 81 was the class of the field. Raleigh’s Greg Grabus was 1 stroke back.
Greensboro’s Lewis Wilson, playing in his first event of the year, got his 2008 campaign off to a good start in the B Flight with an 85 and a 3 stroke margin over second place finisher Lucas McDonald of Hamlet.
In the C Flight, High Point’s Danny Keever showed some serious grit. Still sporting stitches from some recent major surgery, Keever braved the cold, windy conditions to post a 96 which was good enough to nip Winston-Salem’s Jason Smith by a lone stroke. €œMy front nine was the keyâ€, stated Keever. €œI had a 44, which I felt pretty good about. I kinda slowed down some on the backâ€.
The next Egolf event is the season’s first “Major†at The Challenge in Graham. €œWe always have a strong field there†noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. €œWe’re filling up fast but I still have some spots open. It would be a good idea for anyone interested in competing in next week’s event to contact me as soon as possibleâ€.
