2014 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2014
THE CHALLENGE GOLF CLUB
-----
|
===============================================================
-------The Challenge Golf Club------
A four-star rated course by Golf Digest, this 6935-yard (from the back tees) championship par 72 layout features some beautiful holes in all of golf.
The course was created by Larry Waggoner and built on wooded rolling farmland adjacent to the Haw River. The farmland was part of the Waggoner family Farm (Hideaway Farms) and provides a scenic round as well as chance for the risk takers to score well.
The Challenge lives up to its name by offering all Tour members a great test of ability and shot-making. In addition to the greens, the perfectly manicured bermuda fairways are defined by lakes, thick hardwood forests and well-placed sand bunkers.
This is a favorite of both the Triad, Pinehurst and Triangle Golfers.
- Voted 2nd Best New Course in North Carolina by NC
Magazine
- Best New Public Course in the Piedmont by Carolinas
Magazine
- Currently Rated Four-Star Golf Digest Rating
- Consistently voted as one of the Top 50 courses in North
Carolina
- Host of several Mid-Am Qualifiers

Improve Your Golf Fitness To Play Better Golf During Your Round.
All From The Comfort Of Your Home and In Only 30 Minutes A Day.
From: Stephen Ladd – Founder, Renegade Golf Fitness Institute
Are you serious about your golf game? I mean obsessed with crushing your drives, sticking your irons and draining putts? Not to mention becoming top dog in your foursome?
I thought so…
No doubt you’ve noticed the rise in popularity of fitness programs for the top players on all the Tours. Maybe you’ve started a fitness program in hopes of adding more power and distance, but aren’t getting the results you were hoping for . . or even worse, you end up injured and can’t play at all.
There is one primary reason for this, and I’m going to tell you all about it. But first, let me introduce myself.
My name is Stephen Ladd, and my obsession is training golfers as athletes, and developing their bodies to better use their golf skills and play to their peak potential. I have been doing just that for over 16 years… long before the “golf fitness” craze began.
I have been trained and certified through the most prestigious golf fitness organizations in the world, including The Titleist Performance Institute and CHEK Institute.

PAST CHAMPS VIE FOR GOLFWEEK TOUR WIN AT BENTWINDS COUNTRY CLUB
Fuquay-Varina, NC
March 22, 2014
When Kurt Bryant and Landon Wilkes see Bentwinds Country Club on the Golfweek Amateur Tour schedule, their eyes light up. Bryant came into today's event at Bentwinds as defending Champ, while Wilkes has also had success at this venue, winning the 2010 version.
Bentwinds: C Flight Winner - Kurt Bryant (After Playoff)
History does repeat itself, as the C Flight competitors once again proved to be the class of the field, posting identical 95s during regulation play. Bryant, from Hope Mills and Apex's Wilkes headed out to the Tenth Hole for a sudden death shootout. Considering their past records at this event, the playoff was anti-climatic with Bryant emerging as the champion with a 3-putt bogey.
"I got rushed and that's just not my game", stated Wilkes, while Bryant added " Being able to defend my title removes a little frustration from missing that putt".
Bentwinds: Championship Flight Winner - Eric Roten
A Flight - Dan Anthony (Photo not Available)
Raleigh's Eric Roten, playing in only his second Golfweek Tour event was the Championship Flight winner. His 79 was 2 shots clear of Fayetteville's Larry Hardee. Hardee, also a new Tour member this season has "cashed" in every event in which he's competed "on-Tour". "I think these guys'll be going head-to-head a bunch this year", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
Tour veteran Dan Anthony of Thomasville equaled Roten's score in the A Flight, albeit from shorter tees. His 79 was two shots clear of Mebane's Dave Mills who was competing in his very first Tour event.
Another player with plenty of Tour experience, Greenville's Jimmy Adams, enjoyed the largest margin of victory on the day as his 80 was 4 shots clear of Raleigh's Todd Bryant in the B Flight.
Bentwinds Flight Winners (left to right)
B Flight - Jimmy Adams; D Flight - Denis Meyer
In D Flight action another Tour rookie made his mark with Denis Meyer of Apex taking the crown with an even 100. He was 2 shots clear of Fayetteville's Bernard Broadnax.
"It's exciting to see a mix of new Tour members and 'old hands' succeeding", declared Hallenbeck. "We had four past National Champions competing in this event, so the field was pretty strong. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the year shapes up".
Next event for the Tour is at The Challenge in Graham on March 29. There are openings for that event.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #242
Stan has hit his tee ball onto the edge of a cart path.
He simulates his stance and places a tee in the ground to indicate the nearest point of relief. He then estimated a one club-length distance and dropped the ball within that area no closer to the hole than his NPoR.
This dropped ball rolled into a spot where he would again have interference with the cart path, so he dropped again. This time the ball rolled away from the cart path, no closer to the hole about 1 1/2 club-lengths from where it first struck a part of the course.
Stan lifted the ball and placed it where it first struck a part of the course on the second drop. A fellow competitor asked Stan why he did that. Stan replied because it had rolled more than 1 club-length after being dropped. The fellow competitor advised Stan that his dropped ball could roll up to 2 club-lengths before he needed to re-drop/place and he should put it back where it came to rest after the second drop.
This Stan did, so his next stroke will be:
A. His 2nd.
B. His 3rd.
C. His 4th
D. His 5th.
Answer:
B, his 3rd.
This is an easy penalty to overlook.
Stan’s actions were not meant to breach the Rules, just the opposite. He wants to comply; but his lack of knowledge got him in a bit of trouble.
On the second drop, when Stan’s ball rolled 1 1/2 club-lengths and came to rest away from the hole, that ball was in play and should not be moved or touched. On any drop, a ball may bounce/roll up to two club-lengths without having to be re-dropped or placed.
Stan should have simply played the ball as it lay. When he mistakenly lifted the ball to place it, he breached R18-2a for moving his ball in play, and is penalized one stroke and must replace the ball on the spot from which it was lifted.
His fellow competitor saved Stan from a 2-stroke penalty, as Stan would have played from a wrong place if not corrected (R20-6 and 20-7).
The placing of tees when taking relief is not a requirement, but is a recommended practice. The player can estimate the nearest point of relief and/or can also estimate the one club-length distance, or any combination there-of.
When going for the maximum or minimum relief, I use tees to mark both my nearest point of relief and the extent of my drop. Remember, when measuring, the player may use any club he has selected for play.
The Rules would have you use the same selected club in all measurements for resolving any specific situation. Oh, and those tees you stick in or place on the ground are not deemed equipment when used to mark the nearest point of relief or the extent limit for a drop.
So, if the ball were to hit one of them and stop or deflect, there is no need for concern. Every reason for a re-drop under R20-2c is determined by where the ball comes to rest.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
