RALEIGH'S GERMAIN WINS 3RD CAREER MAJOR

Mebane, NC - (May 16, 2009) Raleigh's Mike Germain prevailed in a 2-hole sudden death playoff with Eden's Chris Walker to capture his 3rd career Egolf Amateur Golf Tour Major Title Saturday at Mill Creek Golf Club. Playing in the C Flight, both Germain and Walker posted scores of 84 for their regulation round, and then headed back to hole #1 to determine an outright winner.
Germain took the title on the 2nd playoff hole as Walker conceded the victory to him after hitting 2 errant shots left from which he couldn't recover.
Germain had posted double "Major" wins in his first year on Tour in 2007, but had not come close since. "I was pumped for it (the Major) all week", said Germain. "I thought an 83 would win it going in. I didn't know if my 84 was gonna be good enough".
There was extra pressure in the playoff, because with this being a Major event, a victory in any flight earned automatic qualification to the National Finals that are held at Hilton Head in late October. That event hosts the top players from over 30 Egolf Amateur Tours around the country.
The C Flight wasn't the only flight that experienced playoff excitement. Three players tied for the Championship Flight lead after regulation play with 77s. It took him 5 holes of extra golf, but with daylight waning, Tracey King of Selma walked away with top honors over Kernersville's Park Williams and Randleman's Brock Elder.
In the A Flight, only one golfer managed to break 80. Burlington's Ben Shipley fired a 77 for a 3-stroke margin over a foursome of fellow competitors - Tad Galloway of Cary, Randleman's Bobby Elder, Ted Ciesla of Apex, and Eden's Steve Cummings.
Jamie Knowles of Roseboro "punched his ticket" to Hilton Head with a 79 in the B Flight, which gave him a 1-stroke win over Knightdale's Ted Pauling.
"As should be the case with any Major event, the course played tough today, especially in the Championship Flight where they played from over 7,000 yards", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "But just like in the professional Majors, the guys who kept it in the fairway and made some putts came out on top".
