Asheboro, NC - (April 19, 2008) Four C Flight golfers broke 90 in the Egolf Amateur Golf Tour event held at Pinewood Country Club Saturday. Three of them wound up in a playoff for 1st place. Greensboro’s Cuong Ton, Reidsville’s Ray Schenkel, and Bill Hornbaker of Cameron all had regulation 86s after 18 holes of tournament competition. All 3 advanced to Hole #1 to start the first C Flight sudden-death playoff of the 2008 season.
Hornbaker experienced some tough luck in the playoff as his tee shot barely grazed a tree limb and wound up in a difficult spot amongst the trees. His second shot once again barely nicked a tree and caromed out of bounds, effectively ending any chance he might have had to come out on top. Schenkel hit a good tee shot, but pulled his second shot slightly left of the green, leaving a very slick chip down to the hole. His effort ran about 12 feet past the hole and he was unable to convert the putt for par. Ton, on the other hand, played the hole like a Championship golfer. His tee shot on the 340 yard, par 4 hole left him about 100 yards to the green, and he lofted a wedge to 10 feet from the hole. A routine 2-putt sealed the victory for him.
Tracey Beaman of Louisburg made sure there was no such drama in the B Flight. His 77 gained him an 8-shot win over High Point’s Steve Tracey. Beaman also earned himself a “promotion†to the A Flight for future events as his 77 moved his Tour Handicap below the B Flight level.
The Championship Flight winner also enjoyed a relatively comfortable margin of victory as James Moore of Greensboro fired a 1-over 73 from the 6,791 yard back tees. Winston-Salem’s Mark Robinson had a 77 for second.
Tour veteran Rick Reisinger, who had not entered an event in 2008 prior to Pinewood, made his Tour debut this year a successful one with a 75 and a 2-stroke victory over Greensboro’s Bob Gardner. Greensboro’s James Earles returned from a 3-year Tour absence to grab 3rd with an 80.
