Bobby Elder (A Flight) Ric Pfister (B Flight) Mark Harders (C Flight)
Pinehurst, NC (June 20, 2009) - Jim Arlington of Apex and Australian native Mark Harders, who now resides in Raleigh, took home their first Championship trophies in Egolf Amateur Tour play Saturday at The Pit Golf Links. Both players have finished close to the top earlier this season, but this was their first visit to the winner's circle. While Harders enjoyed a relatively comfortable 3-stroke margin of victory over Linden's Doug Tompkins in C Flight competition, Arlington was pressed to extra holes for his Championship Flight win.
Cary's David Cotton matched Arlington's 2-over 74 in regulation play on the 6,559 yard track. Both players headed back out to the 10th hole for a sudden-death playoff. After swapping pars on 10, Cotton's tee shot on 11 found water, and Arlington jumped on the opportunity with a routine par for the victory.
Pittsboro's Richard Pfister, who had played in the Harris Teeter Senior Tour event at The Pit on Thursday and posted an 86 in B Flight competition, must have figured out just how to attack the course, as he rebounded with a 73 for his season's low score and an easy 5-stroke win over Kenny Smith of Randleman and Fayetteville's Jeff Wilson.
"While the B and C Flights played from only 6,138 yards - more than 400 yards less than the Championship and A Flights, that 73 was still a remarkable score", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
Bobby Elder of Randleman, who like the Championship Flight, played from those back tees, cruised to a 6-shot win over Laurinburg's Robin Neverve with a 75 for the top spot in the A Flight.
