Asheboro, NC (April 16, 2011) - Dire weather forecasts limited the field for the first Major Championship event of the 2011 season on the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour at Pinewood Country Club. While the weather "gurus" predicted major rain in the afternoon, after postponing the scheduled start time for the last of the early rain to pass, the event was played entirely in brilliant sunshine. The course even allowed carts on the fairways with the exception of one hole.
"We still had 80% of the field show up for this event", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "These are truly 'stand-up guys'. I'm sure some of the players who canceled will be disappointed".
The Flight winners in all 5 flights "punched their tickets" to the season-ending National Tour Championship held at Hilton Head in late October. They automatically qualify for that event, which brings together the top 700 players from the 40-odd Tours across the country, due to their victories today.
The Flight winners were:
Championship - Rob Clarke, Raleigh - 73
A Flight - David Randall, Pinehurst - 76
B Flight - Mike Hindmarsh, Ramseur - 81
C Flight - Nelson Peterson, Greensboro - 88
D Flight - Ken White, Greensboro – 93
"We're taking next week off for the Easter Holiday" said Hallenbeck, "but we'll be resuming play on April 30th at Carolina Trace in Sanford. I've got spots open for that one".
