KERNERSVILLE'S MORGAN SURVIVES ROUGH FINISH FOR EGOLF TOUR WIN

Greensboro, NC (August 7, 2010) - Johnny Morgan of Kernersville was cruising in his Egolf Amateur Golf Tour debut at Bryan Park (The Players Course) going into his last 3 holes. At 4-under par all he had to do was par those 3 to wind up with a 68 on the 7,057 yard track and pretty much lock up a Tour win in his first try. Instead, he gave himself some anxious moments with a bogey - bogey - triple bogey finish and a final score of 73.
Fortunately for Morgan, that score held up for a 2-stroke win over a pair of competitors - Mount Airy's Steven Moreland and Mitch Whitley of Zebulon. Morgan fired 6 birdies on the day, including 3 in a row on the back nine.
While Morgan was providing fireworks in his first event ever on-Tour, Rob Hardee also found the winner's circle for the first time in this, his rookie season. Hardee took a little more time than Morgan, as his first win came in his 12th event "on-Tour". The C Flight player registered an 83 playing from the 6,565 yard White tees. He was 2 shots clear of runner-up Dan Pollock of Union Hall, VA.
"Rob has stuck with it through some tough times earlier this season", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "But all you had to do was look at his swing, and you knew it was just a matter of time 'til he grabbed his first win".
Tour veteran Kenny Smith, who recently was promoted from the B Flight up to "A", showed that the move was indeed necessary. He shot a 74 and edged High Point's Pride Grimm by 2 shots. "I think it was a good idea to make the move up to "A" ", said Smith with a grin, holding his winner's trophy.
Tom Brake's last event "on-Tour" was 10 years ago, when it was still called The Carolina Blonde Tour. Business and family duties caused the Jonesville resident to take a long hiatus from the Tour, but he came back with a vengeance today, firing a 77 for a B Flight win. Tour regular Darien Upchurch of Wake Forest shot his best score of the season for an 80 to take 2nd place alone.
"Bryan Park just hosted the USGA Pub Links Championship", noted Hallenbeck. "The rough was very challenging. I was very impressed with the scores our guys put up today".
