Greensboro, NC (March 5, 2011) - A majority of the 98 players in the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour regular season opening event at Bryan Park (The Championship Course) posted modest scores that would be expected after the winter layoff. However, the top guys in 4 of the 5 flights contested turned in numbers that were eye opening even in a mid-season event. The Championship, A, B, and D Flights all had winners with comfortable margins of victory.
Leading the pack was Winston-Salem's Brian Yokley with a 6-stroke cushion in the A Flight. Greensboro's Ken Carlyle, High Point's Jim Goulding, and Bobby Elder of Randleman were distant runners-up. Yokley fired a 2 - over 74. "Brian has a history of early season heroics", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Two years ago in the season opener at Bermuda Run West he enjoyed a similar runaway victory".
Eden's John Revis shot a tremendous B Flight score with a 76 that was 4 - strokes clear of Greensboro's Sean Kim. Revis, who has had some scores in the 90s in Tour play, stated as he received his 1st Place trophy: "I finally shot a score I'm capable of on this Tour".
Scott Whitt, a late entry in the Championship Flight was happy he made the trip from Dry Fork, VA, as his 74 topped the competition by 3 strokes. Greensboro's Tod Dauler took 2nd. It should be noted that the Championship guys teed it up from 500 yards further back than the other 4 flights.
Tyler Martin, who had won the D Flight at the Mid Pines pre-season event last week, made it 2-in-a-row with an 89 for the top spot. "Tyler not only won today, but he also gained a promotion to the C Flight for all future Tour events. I have no doubt he's going to continue his success there" said Hallenbeck. Siler City's Carlos Simpson took 2nd with a 95 and the Master Card that went with it.
The most hotly contested flight was the C Flight where 3 players were within 2 shots of the eventual champion, Raleigh's Brent Hanes. Hanes shot a 91, only 1 shot clear of David Morton from Ridgeway, VA and 2 ahead of Greg Dotson of Dry Fork, VA.
