============================================================== TIGHT RACES HIGHLIGHT GOLFWEEK MAJOR EVENT Mebane, NC May 18, 2013 The second "Major" event of the 2013 season on the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour was held at Mill Creek Golf Club. The total margin of victory for all five flights combined was a mere 6 strokes. Two flights ended in ties, requiring a sudden-death playoff, while in the other three flights the difference between 1st and 2nd place was 1, 2, and 3 shots respectively. The playoffs occurred in the Championship and C Flights, and both went only one hole before a winner was determined.
Flight Winners (l to R): Championship Flight - Chris Collins; A Flight - Coray Mitchell; B Flight - Paul Chanthaphone; C Flight- Doug Harvey; D Flight - Greg Dauscher In Championship play Chris Collins from Fayetteville was able to edge Zach Arms of Winston-Salem after both had posted regulation 75s from the 6,951 yard back tees. In the C Flight, experience was the most important factor as all three playoff participants - Knightdale's Doug Harvey, Bill Wilkinson of Rolesville, and Sims' James Eatmon - are all regular players on the sister Senior Amateur Golf Tour. After all three posted regulation 84s, it was Harvey who emerged victorious in the extra stanza with a par on the first hole. Paul Chanthaphone of Greensboro was playing in the C Flight as recently as two events ago, but he was promoted to the B Flight as his Tour handicap index fell into the higher flight's range. He showed that the move was a wise one with a 78 and a 1 stroke margin of victory over a trio of players in his new flight - Marcus Dudley of Raeford, Winston-Salem's Jason Smith, and Pinehurst's Tom Kubla. The lowest score of the entire event belonged to Greensboro's Coray Mitchell in the A Flight, who fired a 1-under 71 from the 6,387 yard Blue tees. Mitchell enjoyed the largest margin of victory of the day, topping Fielddale, VA's Clint Hall by 3 strokes. Mitchell will have to get used to playing from the longer Championship Flight tees in future events, as he volunteered to make the upward move. "Coray's a multiple winner 'on-Tour' and a stand-up guy", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I'm glad he made this decision, because I think he'll be extremely competitive playing with the 'big-boys'". Greg Dauscher made it three wins in-a-row in the D Flight, edging Raven, VA's Greg Dotson by 2 strokes - 94 to 96. "All you had to do to be "in the money" in the D Flight today was break 100", quipped Director Hallenbeck. The Golfweek Tour will be taking this coming week off for the Memorial Day holiday, and will resume play on June 1 at Bermuda Run West Country Club. Openings are available for that event. "Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold" Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them! Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind! Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly. It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons) It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!). It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Rules Review It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information. If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #200 Jerry’s ball hit rocks inside a water hazard and bounced back into play. He thinks to himself that his ball may be damaged because of its contact with the rock. He marks and lifts the ball to inspect it. He finds no other damage other than brown scuff mark on the ball where it impacted the rock. Choose the correct statement: A. If Jerry correctly concludes this ball is not unfit for play and replaces it, there is no penalty. B. If Jerry replaces the ball he incurs a penalty of one stroke. C. If Jerry cleaned his ball beyond what is necessary to inspect it for damage before replacing, he would be penalized a total of two strokes. D. If Jerry incorrectly substitutes another ball by placing it on the original spot, he is immediately penalized a total of two strokes or in a match, would lose the hole, but there is no additional penalty under R5-3.
Answer: B is the correct answer. Jerry might think his ball is damaged, but he must inform somebody of that thought and what he intends to do in case they want to watch his inspection and perhaps view the ball as well. [A] is incorrect because the procedure for inspecting a ball for damage (R5-3) is identical to the one for lifting a ball for identification (R12-2). The player must: 1. Announce to his opponent, fellow competitor or marker his intention to lift the ball. 2. Give that person the opportunity to observe the lifting/inspection/replacement. 3. Mark the ball before lifting. 4. The ball must not be cleaned beyond what is necessary to inspect. 5. Replace Failure to comply with any of 1 thru 4 results in a 1 stroke penalty. Jerry didn’t comply with 1 or 2. [C] is incorrect because any breach of the procedure is a 1-stroke penalty and other breaches are not accumulative. [D] is incorrect because the penalty for an improper substitution only applies if the player makes a stroke at the ball. If Jerry realized his mistake before the stroke, he could correct his error under R20-6. Something to consider: When lifting a ball because the player is unsure of its identification, meaning it might be his, this procedure should be used even if the ball the player lifts turns out to be a stray ball. When there is doubt as to the identification of your ball—for any ball you lift—you should adhere to the requirements for proper lifting/inspecting/identification. The reason I emphasize this is because if the ball is your ball in play and you neglected to follow the procedure, you will be penalized one stroke. While you would not be penalized for improper procedure if the ball is deemed a stray ball, why take that chance? =============================================== |
Tour Weather Guidelines: Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist. Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening. If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
