GOLFWEEK TOUR 2-DAY LOCAL FINALS HAS PLAYOFFS, COMEBACKS AND CHAMPIONS

Greensboro. NC (September 25, 2011) - It looked grim initially Saturday when 75 Tour members teed off in rainy, soggy conditions for the Golfweek Amateur Tour Triad and Raleigh/Pinehurst Local Finals at Bryan Park Golf Course. But the "golf-gods" were kind, and after 9 holes were completed the sun broke out, and as it turned out, the final 27 holes of the competition over 2 days were played in very pleasant conditions. Suprisingly, the lower scores were mostly registered during Saturday's wet round. That may have something to do with the fact that Sunday's round was contested on Bryan Park's Champions Course, which held the USGA National Publinks Championship last year. Despite that fact, a number of golfers improved over their first day showing and received the awards that went with that improvement.
In the Championship Flight, Kernersville's Park Williams, playing from the back tees, shot an impressive 1-over 73 to go with his opening round of 75 for a 148 total and a 2-stroke margin of victory over Greensboro's Sean Pardue. "Williams is tough when he's on, and he showed it again today", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
In the D Flight, Greensboro's Ken White showed how to play a 2-day event by posting his lowest-ever Tour score with an 86 on day 2. He came from 3 strokes behind with a total of 177 and a comfortable 10-stroke margin of victory. Dave Flanagan of Clemmons fired an 89 on day-1 and held on for 2nd place.
Both the A Flight and C Flight went to sudden death playoffs to determine a winner. Mike Meadows, who had the low round of the entire event Saturday in the A Flight with a 71, shot a respectable 77 on day 2, but that enabled Columbia SC's Tim Knight, who paired 74s for the 2 days to tie him with a 148. Knight ended it in style with a birdie on the 1st playoff hole to secure the win.
Don Pollock of Union Hall VA, and Pinehurst's Ben Martin, who both "blew-up" the C Flight by breaking 80 on day-1, had an 88 & 86 respectively Sunday to also head out for extra holes. Martin encountered trouble off the tee on the 1st playoff hole, allowing Pollock an opening which he gladly accepted for the victory. Burlington's Joe Magyar held on to his 1st day lead in the B Flight. After firing a 75 on Saturday, his 82 Sunday was good enough for a 3-shot cushion over Tour veteran Daren Green of Durham. The season's final Major Championship, which was "blown-out" by hurricane 3 weeks ago will be held this Saturday, October 1 at Anderson Creek Golf Club near Sanford. There are openings available for that event.
