CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT FIREWORKS SET OFF GOLFWEEK MAJOR AT MILL CREEK
Mebane, NC
May 19, 2012
Nobody could blame Fairfield, Ohio's Matt Weinberger if he thought "Man - this Tour business is easy" right after the start of the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour's Second Major Championship of the 2012 season at Mill Creek Golf Club.
On the 384 yard, par 4, 1st Hole - also Weinberger's very first hole in his very first Tour event, he took dead aim and holed out a 58-degree sand wedge from 105 yards for an eagle 2.
It was one of four eagles posted by Championship Flight players. "That's the longest shot I've ever holed out" quipped Weinberger.
Mill Creek Flight Winners (Left to Right):
C Flight - Brad Smith; Championship Flight - Neal Faulkner;
D Flight - Chad Burton; B Flight - Jay Yergeau
Ironically, not one of those eagles belonged to Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner who dominated the competition with a four-under 68. Faulkner was a picture of consistency, registering 4 birdies and 14 pars. High Point's Dan Holland, who shot a 71, said "Man! Shoot under par and still lose by 3 strokes. It's getting tough out here".
As is the case with all 5 flight winners, Faulkner's win in this Major event guarantees him a spot in the year-ending National Tour Championship on Hilton Head Island in October. That event brings together the top 700 players from the 40 Golfweek Tours around the country.
Mill Creek Flight Winner: A Flight - Dan Anthony
Two players also went low in A Flight action. Thomasville's Dan Anthony and Raleigh's Mark McKenna both posted regulation 73s and headed back out for some sudden death warfare. The war didn't last long as a couple of miscues by McKenna allowed Anthony to take home the trophy on the first extra hole of the playoff with a par.
Godwin's Jay Yergeau made the announcement that's he's going up to play A Flight in the future after posting a 75 for a 1-shot victory for the B Flight crown over Terry Evans of Apex and Asheboro's Mark Lawson. "Jay's won a few lately", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Volunteering to move up and give some of the other guys a chance shows the kind of stand-up guy he is".
Winston-Salem's Brad Smith shot an 86 for his first career win in the C Flight. He needed every good shot that he hit, just edging Mark Lawson of Asheboro by a single stroke.
Pittsboro's Chad Burton ran away with the D Flight top honors as his 85 was 8 strokes clear of runner-up Daniel Patterson of Fuquay-Varina. "Chad's future would seem to be heading for the C Flight in the near future", said Hallenbeck.
The Tour has the coming week off from competition for the Memorial Day holiday, and will resume play on June 2 at Bermuda Run West in Clemmons. There are plenty of spots available for that event. If you are interested in playing, call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556.

ONLY TWO WAYS TO GET TO THE GOLFWEEK NATIONAL TOURNAMENT AT HILTON HEAD
Where are you in the
2012 Point Standings Race?
There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors (only 2 remain) or be one of the Top 10 point earners in your flight.
We have reached halfway into the season and some of the point races of who will be #1 in the Flights and places 7 - 14 are very tight. As little as 25 points separate tour competitors.
Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation? Don't be left out.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #146
In a stroke play event, with the flagstick in the hole, Dan makes a stroke at his ball from on the putting green. Fearing that Dan's ball may strike the flagstick, fellow competitor Mike, goes and pulls the flagstick as Dan's ball is on the way. Unfortunately, Dan's ball strikes Mike's shoe.
Concerning this incident, choose all correct statements:
A. Dan is penalized two strokes.
B. Mike is penalized two strokes.
C. Dan must play the ball as it lies
D. Dan must replace and replay the stroke.
Answer:
Both answers B and D are correct.
The flagstick was not attended.
If not attended to begin with, it must not be attended during the stroke or while a player's ball is in motion if doing so might influence the movement of the ball ('-1).
Obviously, since Dan's ball struck Mike's shoe, Mike's action is considered Unauthorized Attendance and is specifically covered by Rule 17-2. Mike is penalized the general penalty of 2 strokes.
( Answer B).
You can arrive at the second correct answer either by further reading of the penalty statement under '-2 or by reference to Rule 19. Dan's ball in motion was deflected or stopped by Mike's foot which for stroke play, is deemed an outside agency (R19-4 & 19-1). Since this happened to a ball in motion after a stroke on the putting green, the stroke is canceled and Mike must replace and replay his stroke. (R19-1b)
( Answer D).
Take a moment to read Rule 17-2, for it is a simple statement that covers 24 different specific scenarios.
Can you come up with a scenario where this happens and no player is penalized yet the ball would be replaced and replayed? |
Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
