Carthage, NC (June 18, 2011) - One thing about playing in the D Flight in the Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour - if you break 100, you're going to be in the mix. Only one D Flight competitor was able to do that today at Little River Farm, and he did it by the slimmest of margins with a 99. Winston-Salem's Jerry Jordan turned the trick for his first Tour win. He needed every good shot that he hit, as he edged Raleigh's John Dorris by 1 stroke and Tony Jenkins of Cary by 2.
"I guess this shows our Tour handicapping system works pretty well," said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "The entire flight was separated from top to bottom by only 7 strokes. If, on his best day, a golfer can break 100 - we've got a spot for him on-Tour".
Competition was tight in all 5 flights as the largest margin of victory was 2 strokes. Michael Hall of Southern Pines took the Championship Flight laurels by that margin over West End's Kevin Whitaker - 75 to 77, while in the A Flight, Pinehurst's Bill Bower's 77 also was 2 shots clear of Southern Pines' Barry Hemphill. Hemphill was playing in his very first Tour event.
Pinehurst's Tom Kubla came out of the gate like a shot, with birdies on 2 of his first 3 holes and hung in there with a 79 that nipped 2 others in the B Flight by a single stroke. Bob Sheahan of Apex and Aberdeen's Todd Crabtree both registered 80s.
Lately it seems no Tour event would be complete without a sudden-death playoff, and the top C Flight guys made sure that trend would continue, as 3 players finished regulation play tied at 86. Randy Starr of Rocky Mount only needed one hole to decide the matter with a simple par that was anything but simple on the 1st extra hole. After snapping a poor drive on the 432 yard, par 4, 1st hole, Starr hit a 3-wood to 70 yards, lofted a wedge to 12 feet, and calmly sank the par putt that gave him the win over Linden's Doug Tompkins and Adam McKenzie of Aberdeen.
The next Golfweek Tour event is the season's third Major Championship that will be held next Saturday, June 25 at Mill Creek GC in Mebane. There are openings available for that outing. Any amateur golfer interested in competing "on-Tour" can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556.
