GOLFWEEK TOUR WINNERS SCORCH HYLAND GC

Southern Pines, NC (March 19, 2011) - Maybe it was the fact that the greens were perfect for putting, or that the weather couldn't have been better, but whatever the reason, the top players in four of the five flights contested today at Hyland Resort and Golf Club on the Golfweek Amateur Tour went remarkably low in achieving their Tour wins.
Leading that assault was Tour rookie Eli Villanueva who equaled the lowest Raleigh/Pinehurst member A Flight score ever posted in the 13-year history of the Tour with a sterling 69. The Fayetteville resident registered birdies on the 5 of his first 12 holes enroute to his record tying effort. Playing partner Rob Andrews noted " What was amazing is that he bogied his 1st two holes, then chipped in for a birdie on his third hole. That released the hounds, because he didn't miss anything from inside 10 feet for the rest of the day". Finishing 5 shots in back of Villanueva were 2 other 1st year players: Winston-Salem's Jim McDowell and Hollis Peery of Raleigh.
Willow Springs' Brian Anderson enjoyed similar domination in the B Flight with a 74 that was 4 shots clear of Tour veteran Robin Neverve of Laurinburg. Anderson, another Tour newcomer, opened his Tour career last week at Crooked Creek in Fuquay-Varina with a score of 89. Cary's Carl Hill grabbed 3rd with a 79.
The C Flight wasn't without it's scoring hero either, as 11 year Tour vet Mike Hawkins of Pittsboro posted an 81 for a 2-stroke win over Rolesville's Bill Wilkinson. "If this (score) puts me in the B Flight, I don't care" stated Hawkins right after the event. "Wherever my Tour Handicap puts me is where I'll play". "That's one of the great things about playing on our Tour", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "We keep a running handicap on every member based on all of their Tour scores. After this week, a few players may very well find themselves moved up a flight".
Greensboro's Keith Thomas, who had already tasted victory this year in the Pre-Season "Kickoff" event at The Legacy, posted a 92 for the D Flight win. Raleigh's John Dorris and Winston-Salem's Jerry Jordan were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Championship Flight, which played from almost 550 yards further back that the other flights, saw High Point's Dan Holland post a 1-over 73 for the win. Three players finished at 76 - Mark Macejko of Vass, Raleigh's Rob Clarke, and Clayton's Kevin Miller.
