With the season now complete sign up and pay for the National Championship in Hilton Head this week. Let’s get 10 guys from each flight so we can compete for the National Team Champ!
Greensboro, NC (September 26, 2010) - While the national Egolf Amateur Tour Finals are still to be held next month in Hilton Head, SC, three central North Carolina Tours - Triad, Raleigh, and Pinehurst - held their 2-day Local Finals Saturday and today at the Bryan Park facility in Greensboro. Tour members teed it up on day 1 on the Players Course, while Sunday's final round was staged on the Championship Course, which held the USGA Public Links Championship earlier this summer.
"It's nice to be able to hold a regular season-ending event like this on a course that just hosted the best amateurs from all around the country", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Just another benefit of living here in North Carolina".
Two Tour members came through with their very first Tour wins this weekend. Dan Holland of High Point overcame a 3-stroke deficit from Saturday's round in the Championship Flight on day-2 for the win. His 78 equaled the lowest Championship Flight score of the day. Meanwhile, Pelham's Mark Dill, who was the low man going into round 2 in the B Flight, closed fast with a 2-over 38 on his last nine holes to hold his 1st day lead and emerge with the victory.
"Your first Tour win is always special, but when you can do it in the 2-day, season ending finale, it just makes it twice as sweet", noted Hallenbeck. "Both these guys made the big shots toward the end when they needed 'em".
The most hotly contested flight was the C Flight, which came down to a 3-way playoff to determine a champion. Rolesville's Bill Wilkinson, who enjoyed a lead when play started on day-2, shot a 90 in regulation that allowed Elon's Tommy Mooneyham and Jack Frazier of Clemmons, who shot 87 and 89 respectively, back into the "hunt". Wilkinson, however, stalled whatever momentum his 2 pursuers had by winning the 3-way playoff on the first hole with a simple par.
A Flight competitors Bobby Elder and Kenny Smith are good friends and neighbors in Randleman. As a matter of fact, they generally travel together to most Egolf events. Elder went into day 2 of the event in 1st place, having fired a 78 on day 1. Smith was 3 shots back with an 81. Sunday was Smith's turn to hand in a 78, which enabled him to just nip his buddy for the title, as Elder posted an 82. With the winner and the runner-up in the same car, it must have been an enjoyable ride home!
"While the year isn't totally over, because a lot of these guys will be going down to Hilton Head to compete against the other 37 Egolf Tours nationwide, this was a great ending to what has been another successful season "on-Tour' here locally in central North Carolina", stated Hallenbeck.
