2013 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
AUGUST 10, 2013
GRANDOVER RESORT AND GOLF CLUB
(WEST COURSE)
-----
|
Grandover Resort - West Course
Don’t miss playing this beautiful course in Greensboro.
Grandover is always in pristine condition, is a great course to play and one that can challenge you if you don't keep it in the fairway. It was designed on rolling terrain in 1997.
The course is lined with towering hardwoods, and most of the elevated greens have moderate undulations and can be fast but true.
This is a favorite for all Tour members who have played it and all the locals in the Greensboro area.

CHAMP FLIGHT SHOOTOUT ON GOLFWEEK TOUR
Foxfire Village, NC
August 3, 2013
Both Greensboro's Jared Jewett and Chip Collins of Hope Mills posted 4 birdies during their round in the Golfweek Amateur Tour event held at Foxfire Resort on the Grey Fox Course to finish with identical 3-under par 69s.
However, it was Jewett's 5th birdie of the day on the first hole of the ensuing sudden death playoff that gave him the tournament win and thwarted Collins' attempt for a 3rd straight Tour victory.
Jewett was fortunate to even be in the field, as he made his morning tee-time with only moments to spare. He took full advantage of the opportunity, despite his lack of practice time before the event started. He capped his round with a birdie on the difficult 406 yard 18th hole which gave him the opportunity to be in the playoff.
In A Flight competition, 15 year-old Grant Powell of Colfax did manage to win his 3rd Tour start in-a-row with a 72 that nipped his father, Anthony by a single stroke. "Grant has shown terrific improvement as this season has progressed. Three consecutive Tour wins is quite a feat", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "His future in golf is unlimited".
Tight races continued to be the norm in the B Flight as Durham's Matt Genaway, playing in his rookie campaign "on-Tour", edged Durham's Jeffery Silver and Charlotte's Kirk Tatge by a single shot - 78 to 79.
In the C Flight, Oxford's Charlie Brodie posted one of the year's lowest scores with an 81 that was 3 strokes better than James Eatmon of Sims.
Finally, Mike Charles of Piney Point, MD had a "walkover" win in the D Flight with a 104.
The Golfweek Tour next plays at Grandover Resort in Greensboro on August 10. There are a number of spots available for that event.

ONLY TWO WAYS TO GET TO THE GOLFWEEK NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
Where Will You Be In The
2013 Year-End Point Standings Race?
Here Are the 2013 Point Standings By Tour
Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour
Triad Tour Point Standings
There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 10 point earners in your flight.
As you plot your tour schedule be cognizant of the fact, only the top 10 are guarenteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2013.
Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation? Don't be left out.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #211
In a stroke play event, Thompson has hit his drive into a row of bushes that runs between two adjacent holes.
He finds his ball lodged in one of the bushes in an unplayable condition. He elects to take relief under R28, option c, dropping within 2 club-lengths of where his ball lies in the bush. Using his driver to measure 2 club-lengths from his ball, he inserts a tee in the ground, no closer to the hole that marks this 2 club-length distance.
This tee does not quite clear the edge of the bush, but there is a slight ridge in the soil within the two club-lengths that should help deflect the ball out, away from the bush enough for a clear swing. So Thompson drops the ball with the intention of dropping between branches and striking the ridge with the dropped ball.
For his first drop, the ball deflects off a branch and rolls about three club lengths away, so he needs to re-drop. On the second drop the ball lodges in the bush again, suspended about 18 inches above the ground. So he drops a third time and this time the ball hits the desired spot and rolls about three feet away from the edge of the bush but no more than two club-lengths from where his ball struck the ground.
He plays this ball onto the green and makes the putt. To make sure he proceeded correctly, during the play of the next hole he checks with a Rules Official about his actions on the previous hole, accurately reviewing what happened.
What is to be Thompson’s score for the hole?
A. He made four.
B. He made five.
C. He made six.
D. He made six and may be subject to a DQ.
Answer
D is the most correct answer.
Thompson hit the ball three times in holing out, but picked up three penalty strokes during play of the hole.
His first penalty stroke was for taking the Unplayable Ball relief (R28c). In the process of his taking the two club-length relief, he first dropped the ball and it rolled more than two club-lengths from where it first struck a part of the course (the branch).
On the second drop, the ball again first struck the course when it hit the bush but this time did not move more than two club-lengths and was in play. Yes, it is suspended 18 inches above the ground, but the ball is in play and Thompson must contend with the result. When he again retrieved the ball and dropped a third time, playing to the green, he ended up playing from a wrong place.
As he got to play the ball from the surface rather than suspended in the bush, the Rules Official/Committee may well rule that his error was a serious breach. Since the narrative indicates he is in the middle of playing the next hole, if so ruled a serious breach, it is too late for him to correct the error and would be DQed.
To the average player, having to declare a ball unplayable, which comes with a 1-stroke penalty, seems penalty enough. The feeling is the player, in burning a stroke, is entitled to a playable lie after the drop process is complete. Get that idea out of your head.
Know there are no guarantees and no, you are not entitled to a better lie. So pick the best option before you begin and do things like removing loose impediments from an area in which you are to drop.
It also helps if you know how to drop a ball to a spot.
If you have never practiced dropping a ball on a dime-sized spot, next time you are on the range, try it. Stick a tee in the ground, then stand erect, holding a range ball at arm’s length and try to hit the tee.
Think the pros don’t know how to drop to a small spot?

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
