Greensboro, NC (April 4, 2009) - Just like the PGA Tour, the Egolf Amateur Golf Tour hosts four "Major" events during each calendar year. It was only fitting that the first of these events for the 2009 season occurred at Forest Oaks Country Club, which was the site of the PGA's Greater Greensboro Open for 10 years. As they did for the pros, course personnel cut and rolled the greens prior to play, which resulted in a stern but fair test of golfing ability.
The winners of all four flights that were contested automatically qualified for the Egolf National Championship which will be held in October on Hilton Head. Last year that event drew just under 700 participants from around the country. "If our top guys can perform in October like they did under these conditions today, I'm giving notice to the other Tours that they better watch out", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
Kevin Miller of Selma, playing in his very first Tour event, won the Championship Flight, posting a 2-over 74. Greensboro's Robert Everhart had to go one extra hole to beat Durham's Mike Erexson in a playoff for A Flight top honors after both finished with regulation 78s. Thomasville's Nick Terry made his first Tour victory a "Major" with his first place 80 in the B Flight, while Raleigh's Shirral Davis made it two wins in-a-row in the C Flight, posting an 85.
"We had a sell-out today", said Hallenbeck, "and finally the weather cooperated. Some new members are enjoying success on-Tour, and that's also a good sign as we continue to grow".
