Winners from the Challenge!
Graham, NC (March 15,2008) - While rough weather has plagued two consecutive egolf Amateur Tour events to start the 2008 season, one golfer didn’t let Saturday’s heavy rain dampen his spirits at The Challenge Golf Club.
Jeff Posey of Greensboro, playing in the B Flight, hit his most important shot in six years of Tour play with a 9-iron on the 140 yard, par 3, 15th hole. “I’ve always had trouble on this hole in previous events because I tried to steer it away from the water on the right and ended up missing way leftâ€, stated Posey. “This time I thought – Finally! A straight shot on this hole right at the middle of the green. It hit about 10 feet right of the pin, kicked left and caught the slope. The other guys in the group immediately said they thought it might go in – that’s when I heard it hit the flagâ€.
Posey’s “ace†– his 4th since taking up the game, but his 1st in nine years, paid off handsomely for him in the event. The hole was one of two earmarked as “closest-to-pin†holes. The prize for that was a framed, triple matted, large full color photo of the hole, complete with plaque commemorating the feat. In addition, any hole-in-one scored during an Egolf (or Harris Teeter Senior) Tour event wins a golf vacation for two to any one of 150 different resort locations across North America. A case of beer had been added as an additional prize for the “closest†on that hole, and finally – the shot held up for a $75.00 skin in the tournament “skins gameâ€.
While the sun was shining brightly on Posey all day, and for that matter, everyone else at the 1:00pm start time, unfortunately it didn’t hold out for the entire event as heavy rain and lightning hit the course as most players were completing their 12th hole. Tour rules on weather state that as soon as any player in the group spots lightning, the group will come into the clubhouse as a unit. After a half-hour wait, and a check of current radar conditions that showed no signs of abatement, the remainder of the event was called off with winners being declared based on low scores in each flight for the holes that were completed by all members of that specific flight.
The Flight winners were Cary’s Don Cosler in the Championship Flight, Rob Reynolds of Raleigh in the A Flight, Richard McMinis, also of Raleigh in the B Flight, and Cameron’s Bill Hornbaker in C. Despite the rain shortened nature of the event, it was still officially the season’s 1st “Majorâ€, and as such, these 4 flight winners will all receive automatic exemptions into the year-ending Tour National Finals held at Hilton Head in October.
“We have no event this coming Saturday due to the Easter Holidayâ€, stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. “I sure am praying for better weather for our next outing at Eagle Ridge in Raleigh on March 29th, cause our guys have experienced some of the worse weather in the last 2 weeks that we’ve seen on Tour in the ten years I’ve been running this thingâ€.
