Pittsboro, NC (May 14, 2011) - Generally it's not unusual to have one or two players register an eagle in a Golfweek Tour event. Obviously, a great majority of those special scores are turned in by Championship or A Flight members. When "eagles soar" in the higher flights it's a rarity. Two such eagles were turned in by C and D Flight members today at the Golf Club at Chapel Ridge and helped put both "in the money".
Eric Friar of Whispering Pines had put him self in nice shape on the 517 yard, par-5, 7th hole as he stood over his 46-yard third shot into the green. Choking down on a wedge, Friar knocked his 3rd shot into the hole, registering the first eagle ever turned in by a D Flight player in local Tour play.
That shot helped propel Friar to victory in the flight as he finished with an 89 - 3 ahead of Hope Mills' Ty Hale. Greg Dotson of Dryfork, VA was 3rd.
In the C Flight, Fayetteville's Lanzo Wallace turned in his eagle on the 510 yard 11th hole. It enabled him to finish in 3rd place by the margin of a single stroke with an 85. The Flight winner was Paul Haydon of Clayton who made a successful return to Tour play after an extended absence. "Paul shot 82", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck, "He's obviously been practicing during his layoff from Tour competition". Raleigh's Ed Tetlak finished 1 behind Haydon.
76 was the magic number in the Championship, A and B Flights, as all 3 flights were won with that score. In the Championship Flight, Joe Agee of Advance made it 2 wins in-a-row, following last week's Bermuda Run West victory. Agee and the rest of the Championship Flight played from 500 yards farther back than everyone else in the field at 7,036 yards. Kevin Goedeck of Greensboro, who won last week's A Flight competition, made a successful move up to Championship play with a 77, good for 2nd place, while Mount Airy's Steven Moreland came in 3rd.
Greensboro's Cuong Ton topped the A Flight with his 76 - 3 clear of Morrisville's Mike Groenewald. Ton, like Goedeck, had made a move up in flight, as he used to compete at the B Flight level. The same can be said of the B Flight winner - Mike Ivy of Apex. Ivy started the year in the C Flight. He requested a move to the B Flight and justified that decision with his victory today. "Mike's goal is to improve, and he realizes that the easiest way to do that is 'run with the big dogs'. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make at least one more move up the flight ladder", said Hallenbeck. Tour veteran Greg Walker of Raleigh was the only other B Flighter to break 80 with a 78.
The next Golfweek Tour event is the season's 2nd Major Championship at Sapona Country Club this coming Saturday, May 21. There are still openings available for that tournament. Any amateur golfer interested in playing in a Golfweek event can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.
