Sean Pardue (Champ Flight) David McGunigal ( A Flight) Jason Smith (C Flight)
Spring Lake, NC (August 29, 2009) - Both the Championship and B Flights had to go extra holes to determine a winner in the 4th and final "Major" of the 2009 Egolf Amateur Golf Tour season Saturday at Anderson Creek Golf Club.
Winston-Salem's Sean Pardue and Tad Wood of Fairmont both fired even-par rounds of 72 on the 6,578 yd course to tie for the top spot in the Championship Flight. Unfortunately for Wood, after consistently hitting good tee shots all day, he snapped his drive left and out-of-bounds on their first playoff hole, the 533 yd 10th. Pardue's routine par wrapped up the win for him.
In the B Flight, Dunn's Johnnie Baggett emerged the playoff winner over Roseboro's Kyle Knowles, after those two players were the only B Flight members to break 80, finishing with matching 79s.
Normally two playoffs would be the big story in an event of this nature, but possibly the most noteworthy situation of the entire tournament involved a single shot struck by Ray Schenkel, a C Flight member out of Reidsville.
Mired in a fairway bunker exactly 179 yards from the hole on the 396 yard, par 4, 8th hole, Schenkel struck a 5-wood onto the green and into the cup for an eagle 2. While he doesn't always get into the optional "Skins Game" that is available every event, Schenkel did this time, along with 109 other competitors. The result was that he held up for the only skin of the event, and the $550 cash prize that went with it. For good measure the also took 2nd place in his flight 3-strokes behind Winston-Salem's Jason Smith who shot an 82.
David McGunigal bettered his top Tour effort by 5 strokes in taking the A Flight title with a 72. It was McGunigal's 2nd win of the season.
"We had 118 players compete in today's event", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "A great turnout on a great course for the season's final Major. Hopefully we'll turn some good numbers at the remaining 3 regular season events before the Tour Finals in Hilton Head".
