2012 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, MAY 5
MEADOWLANDS GOLF CLUB
-----
Meadowlands Golf Club |
As most of you recall, Meadowlands has long rolling fairways and luscious bent grass greens. However, don't be lulled to sleep, if you are not careful it will snap you back to reality very quickly and cause you to card some big scores on some holes.
But if you pay attention, low scores can be had.
Meadowlands was designed and created by Hale Irwin, one of the games greatest players and is a golf course that is both rewarding and challenging.
Arrive early enough to take advantage of their practice facility which has an excellent driving range, short game area and putting green that should help you mentally shave a few strokes off your score.

Do Not Make This Mistake in 2012!
Earlier this year, millions of people set a New Year's resolution to make more money, but 99% of them will fail to achieve them in 2012.
Their mistake?

But you can't get to a new place in life without directions. If you want to build a business or a second income, then you need a map.
Fortunately there is one prepared for you - a proven blueprint for additional income success.

VILLANUEVA TAMES CAROLINA TRACE'S FIRM GREENS
Sanford, NC
(April 28, 2012)
Winners From Carolina Trace - Lake Course (left to right)
Coray Mitchell - A Flight; Richard McMinis - B Flight;
Eli Villanueva - Championship Flight
Only one Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour member - Fayetteville's Eli Villanueva - was able to break 80 out of the entire field of players in the Carolina Trace (Lake Course) tournament. Playing in the Championship Flight which played from almost 400 yards further back than the rest of the field, Villanueva's 74 was 6 shots lower than any other score posted.
"The course was in absolutely beautiful shape" stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "They just changed all their greens which were fast and very firm. Balls were releasing pretty far once they hit the greens, and this caused a bit of a problem for most players today, but certainly not for Eli. He's shown an ability to go low in the past and I'm sure this isn't going to be an isolated event for him".
At the other end of the competitive spectrum in the D Flight, Fayetteville's Henry Lech also had a special afternoon, posting the lowest score of the year in the flight with an 86 and earning himself a promotion to C Flight competition for the future. As a matter of fact, Lech's score was identical to that of the C Flight winner, Joe Cho, also from Fayetteville.
While Fayetteville residents captured first place in 3 of the 5 flights, both Greensboro and Raleigh were represented as well, with Coray Mitchell winning the A Flight and Richard McMinis taking the B Flight top spot respectively. Mitchell posted an 80, while McMinis carded an 81.
The next Golfweek Tour event will be at Meadowlands Golf Club near Winston-Salem on Saturday, May 5. Any amateur golfer interested in taking part in that event can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions |
Question from week #143
In regards to Rule 13-4, Ball in Hazard, Prohibited Actions, answer the following questions.
1. I am playing in a match and I find my ball inside the margins of a water hazard, but playable as it is on the grass bank of the creek. Before I play the ball I notice another ball in the water about a foot from the shore. It looks brand new. I use my hand to retrieve this ball and stick it in my bag. My opponent tells me I just lost the hole! Is he correct?
2. My ball lies in a bunker, tight up under the lip. I grab my nine iron and set my feet in preparation for the stroke then realize this was a poor choice. There is no way to play the stroke and clear the lip. I need to play more of a sideways shot. So I smooth the depressions made by my previous stance and reset my feet for playing in this sideways direction. A fellow competitor tells me I just picked up a 2-shot penalty. Is he correct?
3. My ball in the bunker is buried under the lip and I decide to take an unplayable lie and drop the ball within two club lengths, no closer to the hole and still within the margins of the bunker. Before I drop the ball, may I remove leaves from the area of my intended drop?
4. My ball in the water hazard is in a position I believe to be playable, but there are some low, over-hanging branches that will present a slight impediment to my swing. If during both my backswing and downswing I hit these branches with my club, knocking some leaves off in the process, would I be penalized?
Answers
1. The opponent is correct. Before you make a stroke at a ball in a hazard, you may not deliberately touch the hazard or water in the hazard with your hand. (None of the acts listed in Exception 1 to R13-4 apply to our case.) Those of you who are fond of ball hunting while waiting to play from a water hazard, should think about waiting until after playing your stroke or taking relief under R26-1.
2. Your fellow competitor knows his stuff. Yes, it is a breach of R13-4. Smoothing foot prints or filling in foot prints from a previous stance attempt would constitute "testing the condition of the hazard" and is prohibited. The proximity of these foot prints to the ball in play is what separates this act from one of caring for the course.
3. No, you may not remove any loose impediments prior to dropping or placing a ball in the hazard.
4. No, no penalty. The Note that follows the three exceptions listed in Rule 13-4 states, in effect: At any time, including at address or in the backward movement for a stroke, the player may touch, with a club, any grass, bush, tree or other growing thing |
Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
