Pinehurst, NC - (July 12, 2008) Relatively comfortable margins of victory occured in all four flights contested during the Egolf Amateur Tour Event held at The Club at Longleaf here Saturday. The Championship Flight produced the closest race, as for the second event in a row, a competitor playing on a guest exemption grabbed the top spot. Last event Drew Belcher of Martinsville walked away with the win, this week Rockingham's Anthony Spivey shot a 2-under 69 on the 6,600 yard track to outdistance Randleman's Brock Elder by 3 shots. Spivey's only 2 bogeys were more than offset by the 4 birdies he posted in a steady round.
The A Flight proved to be a "family affair" as Randleman residents and brothers-in-law Kenny Smith and Bobby Elder took the first two spots with Smith enjoying a comfortable 4-stroke edge, 75 to 79. With Brock's 2nd place finish in the Championship Flight, it was a pleasant commute home for the Randleman trio.
Joe Durrance of Carrboro was in the thick of things for the second straight event in the B Flight. Having lost a 4-hole playoff during the Chapel Ridge event on June 28, Durrance finally went on to victory, enjoying a 4-stroke spread over his 2 closest competitors, Tim Ward of Greensboro and Charlotte's David Ridenhour. Durrance's 76 was his lowest round of the season, as he went into this event with an 11.8 certified Tour handicap.
Pittsboro's Charles Powell also ignored his Tour handicap, which stood at 18.6 in over 20 prior Tour efforts. He cruised to a 9-shot win, being the only C Flight member to break 90 in the event with a slick 81. "We played the C Flight from a little farther back then we normally do", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Charles is a big guy who can really give the ball a ride - today he obviously discovered the secret to keeping it in the fairway".
The Egolf Tour is still accepting new members for this season with over 12 events left to play. Any amateur golfer interested in playing in an event can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.
