2014 GOLFWEEK AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2014
SAPONA COUNTRY CLUB
----
|
===============================================================
Sapona CC was established and designed by Ellis Maples in 1967 and is set amid the hardwood forests of the Piedmont Triad.
Most of you know that the Maples family has a storied golf past dating back to the original courses in Pinehurst and their classic design principles can be seen throughout the Sapona’s golf experience.
Ellis Maples’s creative work and shotmaker's design will require you to have your course management 'A' game on when you play. You will need to think your way through every shot, exactly as golf was intended.
There are good scores to be had at Sapona but only if you know your distances, execute your shot to make sure your ball lands on the correct side of every green and with every approach shot stay below the hole. You can either be in the winners circle, be in contention or expect a long and frustrating day.
Do yourself a favor, play this course this year and hopefully you will enjoy a low score.

3-WAY PLAYOFF FOR GOLFWEEK MAJOR EVENT WIN AT ANDERSON CREEK
Spring Lake, NC
August 23, 2014
The final Major Championship event of the 2014 Golfweek Amateur Golf Tour season had more than it's share of drama, highlighted by a 3 man Championship Flight playoff that took four holes to determine a winner.
Thomas Owen and Larry Hardee, both from Fayetteville, and Greensboro's Tod Dauler all fired even-par rounds of 72 after 18 holes of competition. They headed back out to the 10th tee to settle the issue in a sudden death playoff. On the 4th extra hole Owen registered a birdie after 3 straight pars to capture the crown in his first Tour start.
Anderson Creek Flight Winners (L to R);
Championship Flight - Thomas Owen; C Flight - Rich Bago
The Championship Flight wasn't the only flight that needed extra holes to decide a winner. Anderson Creek Club members Rich Bago of Spring Lake and Flash Gordon of Cameron finished their regulation play with 85s in the C Flight. It took Bago less time than his Championship Flight counterparts to gain the victory, winning on the first playoff hole.
Winston-Salem's Terry Newsome enjoyed his 5th career win "on-Tour" with a 78 that took top laurels in the A Flight. Raleigh's Matt Ellerman and Chapel Hill's Chris Clark were both a single stroke back of Newsome.
Anderson Creek Flight Winners (L to R);
A Flight -Terry Newsome; B Flight - Greg Martin;
D Flight - Brian Endicott
Greg Martin of Whitsett took his second consecutive win in the B Flight with a 78 that was 4 shots clear of runner-up Joe Rollison of Christianburg, VA.
That 4 stroke margin was the same that Clayton's Brian Endicott managed over Durham's Tony Eaves in the D Flight competition with a 91.
The Tour will be taking next week off for the Labor Day Holiday and resume play on September 6 at Sapona Country Club in Lexington. Openings are available for that event.

TWO CAREER FIRSTS HIGHLIGHT GOLFWEEK TOUR EVENT AT CHAPEL RIDGE
Pittsboro, NC
July 26, 2014
Rocky Mount's James Lingo stood on the 6th tee at Chapel Hill Golf Club with a 3-iron in his hand. The 14-year Tour veteran hit a shot straight at the pin on the 178 yard hole, but the uphill hole blocked everyone's view of the green from the tee. The C Flight group reached the green and didn't see a ball short or long. Playing partner Andy Bousman peered in the hole and said "Here it is".
It was Lingo's first career hole-in-one.
Chapel Ridge Winners (L to R):
C Flight - James Eatmon; D Flight - Bernard Brodnax
Bousman of Kernersville also had a positive day, shooting his lowest Tour round ever, coming in as C Flight runner-up, only 1 stroke behind James Eatmon of Sims who shot an 84.
In the A Flight, Pelham's Mark Dill shot an all-time personal low score (not just "on-Tour". but anywhere). His 70 nipped two players - Fayetteville's Hollis Peery and Raleigh's Spurling Cookby a single shot. "I've never had a day like this in my life", stated Dill. "Every putt I looked at went in. Heck, I made an 18 footer on my last hole to save par".
Chapel Ridge Flight Winners (L to R):
B Flight - Nick Slager; A Flight - Mark Dill, his 70 was the lowest score he has ever posted, anywhere.
An even-par 72 by Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner was enough to secure the top spot in the Championship Flight over a quartet of players. Jared Jewett and Bryan Sepich, both from Greensboro, Shannon's Stephen Pippin and Sanford's Craig Sturdivant all shot 74.
A season best score of 76 by Raleigh's Nick Slager was enough to give him a comfortable 4 stroke margin in the B Flight. Another Raleigh Tour member, Richard McMinis was runner-up in the flight.
Fayetteville's Bernard Broadnax enjoyed an even wider margin of victory in the D Flight with an 89. Elvis Sheahan of Durham and Richland, VA's Greg Dotson both shot 95s.

TOUR ROOKIE GETS 1ST GOLFWEEK TOUR WIN
Greensboro, NC
August 2, 2014
Playing in only his 2nd Tour event today at Forest Oaks Country Club, Matt Lewis from Drexel Hills, PA took home his first trophy glass after firing a 75 - the lowest round in the entire event. "I'm probably going to play an event pretty soon with the Philly Golfweek Tour", stated the A Flight member. "I'm heading up there later this summer".
Lewis needed every good shot he hit, edging 16 - year Tour veteran Tracy Beaman by a single stroke.
The B Flight also produced it's share of low scores with Raleigh's Mike Groom posting a 76. He too won by the narrowest of margins as Stokesdale's J. Combs and Raleigh's Richard McMinis were both a single shot back.
The C and D Flight winners keep up the low scoring trend with relatively comfortable victories. Kernersville's Andy Bousman, a C Flight runner-up in last week's Chapel Ridge event, had his second consecutive Tour low round with an 83. James Lingo of Rocky Mount was 6 strokes back.
Meanwhile Greensboro's Keith Thomas continued his excellent play this season with an 89, 3 shots better than Richlands, VA's Greg Dotson to grab the D Flight crown.
While the winning score in the Championship Flight, posted by Greensboro's Jared Jewett, was a 77, it should be noted that the top flight played from tees that were almost 500 yards longer than those of their counterparts in the lower flights. Once again the competition was fierce, as Jewett just outdistanced Chapel Hill's Henry Lister and Gibsonville's Neal Faulkner by a single shot.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?
Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.
I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.
There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #264
Allen Rench is playing in his club’s stroke play qualifier for the club’s match play championship. His tee shot on the par four 11th has come to rest about two inches inside the lateral water hazard that guards the right side of the hole. The ball is clearly visible but some briars and other overhanging growth from plants inside the hazard may impede his stroke.
He moves about four yards behind the spot of his ball and selects a similar spot on the margin. Standing outside the hazard, Allen tries several practice swings hitting through briars and plants which are rooted within and overhang outside the margin of the hazard, but is careful not to hit any material located within the vertical margins of the hazard.
Satisfied with what he must do, Allen approaches his ball and attempts a stroke.
Unfortunately, his first attempt is truncated as he comes up short of the ball when his club got completely tangled in briars on the downswing. His second attempt is more successful and he advances the ball up the fairway. From there Allen takes three more strokes to complete play of the hole.
Allen’s score for the 11th hole is:
A. 5
B. 6
C. 7
D. 8
Answer
B. Allen made six strokes at his ball and had no penalty strokes. He did not breach R13-2 nor R13-4. When taking his practice swings he did not in any way improve the position or lie of the ball, the area of his intended stance or swing, or the line of play. Any improvement he made to the growing material in the path of his swing was the result of a stroke and is permitted by the Rules.
You may note he was careful not to disturb any growing material inside the vertical margin of the hazard. This was an unnecessary precaution, but understandable under the conditions. In taking a practice swing in a hazard he his permitted to touch grass, bush, tree or any growing thing inside the hazard with his practice swing. (See Note to Rule 13-4.) He just may not ground his club in doing so.

Tour Weather Guidelines:
Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.
The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).
In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
