The second tour stop of the 2010 season got underway Saturday on another Chamber of Commerce day. Carolina Lakes GC in Sun City, SC was in great shape and believe it or not we even got to ride on the fairways. Big thanks to Doug Howard and all his staff for getting the course in suburb playing conditions. If you have not ever played Carolina Lakes GC make sure you put it on your must play list for this year, you will be very happy you did.
Championship Flight:
David Schmidt just burned the edge on his birdie attempt on the first hole but when he hit to five feet on number two the birdie barrage was on. With birdies at 2 and the par 5 sixth Schmidt turned the front side at one under par. The inward nine Schmidt continued his crushing his new driver to put him into easy birdie opportunities which he converted on three of them to finish the day at 68. Being early in the season Alex Brenner was very happy with his 73 on Saturday even for second place. Brenner got a few putts to drop on the back side but his one under par 35 could not keep pace with Schmidt’s 3 under 33. Last years National Champion Joe Jaspers finished alone in third with 76 and Charleston’s Pete Detemple was fourth with 77. Jody Clary rounded out the top five spots with 78.
A Flight:
It had been almost 2 years since Michael Priester last hosted the Victory glass back at CC of Salisbury. Carolina Lakes would prove to be the end of his drought as Mike cruised to victory with a smooth 76 on Saturday. Two players finished only two shots back at 78 but it was tour veteran Mike Nasekos beating out newcomer Mike Sheer for second. Congrats to Mike Sheer who likes the competitive arena as he has cashed in the first 2 events of the 2010 season. Last years point’s winner Jason Breedlove fired an 80 good enough for fourth place while Don Bridges, Greg Ries and Rex Mills all tied for 5th with 81’s.
B Flight:
Greg McCoy got his first victory of the young season with a one shot victory over 2 players. McCoy fired a 79 on Saturday just beating out Jerry York and Jimmy Chapman who both shot 80’s. It was York beating out Chapman on the card for second place. Scott Meckes shot 82 for fourth place while Scott Huneycutt and Doug Tyler tied for fifth place with 83’s.
C Flight:
Jeff Gracer, Allen Hagen and Mike Hinson all ended up with 86’s on Saturday and gave us the first sudden-death playoff of the year. Hagen and Hinson are long time tour vets who had been in playoffs before but Gracer was standing on the tee a little nervous at his first extra hole campaign. Gracer hit the green in regulation and two putted for his par, then watch as Mike Hinson’s par putt just slipped by the cup given Gracer his first tour victory. During his victory shot Gracer asked how to hold his crystal and I said what ever feels good to you, it is your day and well earned victory enjoy. William Buie just missed the playoff by one shot with a late eagle on the 17th Buie finished on shot back at 87.
The tours next stop will take us to Charlotte National GC on March 20th a 1:00pm shotgun start. Please email me back (Yes or No) if you wish to get entered.
Practice rounds will be only $25 Monday-Friday for all participants. Show your tour card to get the rate please.
