A great spring day is how I would classify the weather that greeted the 110 player fiels this afternoon. Temps that hit the low 70's, a few clouds and slight winds made for a pleasant day for most. The condition of the Donald Ross greens were as expected....smooth and FAST. I always say these are the best bent grass greens we will play all year long.
In the Champ Flight, It was Joe Jaspers who shot even par to take home first place. If anyone followed along using the live scoring app, there were plenty of lead changes along the way. Joe and Jay Barnes were tied going to the 17th, but for the first time all day, Jay hit one t-ball on a par 3 that he would like back. Unfortunately, it went OB which gave Joe the cushion needed for the victory. In the end, we had a 5 way tie for second place with players shooting +4, 75's. AS always ties for anything else but first are handled by the scorecard playoff and it was John Heffernan (2nd), Dennis Reames (3rd) and David Schmidt (4th). Jerell Feilds and Jay Barnes missed out on the top 4 places due to the playoff.
In the A Flight, it was Joe Zabrecky who took home first place honors. Joe played a hell of a round and was glued to the live score leaderboard in the closing holes as he and Adam Johnson were either tied or within 1 shot of each other as the round concluded. Joe's birdie-par finish on 8 and 9 sealed the deal for a +5 (76) round. Adam Johnson shot 77 to take home second place, Michael Brandenburg finished 3rd with 78, Kevin Ronan 4th with 79 and rounding out the top 5 was Don Bridges with an 81.
For those of you not playing with Joe today missed a few creative shots...Hole # 14 ..hit the 6 iron into the rocks in the creek bed so that it hits softly onto the green (I think he called it) and the ricochet off the tree on the 4th hole to set himself up for an easy up and down from the front of the green. You know what they say....better to be lucky than...
In the B flight, it was Cliff Sult who came from behind with a strong back nine charge to take home the victory with a great round of 78. Dan Boeving took second place honors with and 80, Chris Lepore (last week's winner) and Lynn Anderson tied for 3rd, but it was Lepore who won via scorecard playoff. Rounding out the top 5 it was the early round leader, Durwin Striplin, who won on a scorecard playoff over Justin Fowler, both players shooting 82.
In the C flight, the top three finishers all played in the same group and must have pushed each other until the final hole. In the end, it was my fellow Northstone CC member, Steve Daniels who played his best round of the year to take first place. Steve's 86 was one better than Michael Guarino and Pedro Lantigua who both shot 87. Michael took second using our scorecard playoff tiebreaker. Rounding out the top 4 was Tony Pharr who shot 88.
In the D flight, we had our only on course playoff today with Keith Gibson, beating out last week’s winner Chandler Carter. Again, with this flight it was very close until the end with 5 golfers all within 2 shots of each other. In the end, it was Keith and Chanlder's scores of 98 that got them into the playoff.
