Sun City - Carolina Lakes recap.
Over 100 golfers braved the cold temperatures to start off the 2018 season. Having a 1-hour delay starting at 12 noon, we knew that time was not on our side, but everyone did a great job in playing "Ready Golf". Not only did everyone finish with time to spare, we also had 1 on-course playoff in the Champ Flight which was also completed without issue.
Todd Burrell and his staff at Carolina Lakes were great hosts once again for our opening event to the season. Now...On to the golf...
Championship Flight:
Jim Aughty and John Heffernan tied after 18 holes, both players shooting 2 over par 74's. John missed a 12 footer on 18 to seal the victory, and that ultimately cost him the tournament win. Jim took charge in the playoff and came away with the victory with a par on the second playoff hole. In 3rd place, David Boyce took the honors with a 4 over par round of 76. Rounding out the top 4 was Travis Dodge shooting a round of 77.
A Flight
3 strokes separated a very close battle in this flight today. Jason Breedlove came away with a 1 shot victory shooting a great round fo 76 in the cold conditions. 3 golfers tied for 2nd all shooting 77, and based on the handicap hole playoff system, Mark Ballew took 2nd, Darryl Moss was 3rd and Michael Brandenburg took 4th. 5th and 6th places were also settled via a scorecard playoff. Robert Taggart, Chance Grego, David Rotatori and Scott Ilowite all posted scores of 78, but it was Taggart taking 5th and Grego taking 6th and final paying position for the A flight on this day.
B Flight
This proved to the be flight that had the largest margin of victory. James Burrell birdied 3 of his final 5 holes to shoot an awesome round of 77 and win by 5 shots. John Torres shot 82 and took home 2nd place honors. John Rinaldi and Cliff Morgan tied for 3rd with scores of 83, but again it was Rinaldi taking 3rd based on the Scorecard Playoff. John Page took home the final paying position today after winning a scorecard playoff with Allen Hagen and Dirk Krause. All players shot 84.
C Flight
Another close battle in this flight as the top 4 golfers were all within 3 shots of other. New Comer, Xin Zhang took home his second victory in the last few weeks. (He also took top honors in the C Flight at the Dixie Classic). Xin shot 83 and took a 2 shot victory over Ken Young and another newcomer, Jimmy Chang. Both players shot 85 but it was Ken that took hone 2nd place on the scorecard playoff. Craig Brown took home the final placing spot with a score of 86.
D Flight
Again, another close battle with 2 shots separating the top 3 places. Chris McGee comes away with a 2 shot victory shooting a score of 93. Chandler Carter and Dannie Gay tied for 2nd with scores of 95, but it was Carter that took home second place, based on the scorecard playoff.
Again, thank you all for coming out on this cold day in February, our next event is less than 2 weeks away at Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster, SC. We have a limited supply of carts, so please register/pay to confirm your spot in the field.
