CHARLOTTE – Local golfers will again have a tour to call their own as the popular egolf Amateur Tour returns to Charlotte with an impressive schedule for 2009.
The Charlotte egolf AGT hosts a lineup of 20 local tournaments beginning Feb. 7th at Charlotte National and concluding with local finals Oct. 3-4th at Warrior Golf Club and CC of Salisbury.
The tour is for amateurs of all ages and abilities. Members are placed in one of four flights based on handicaps. Flights are: Championship (0-5 handicap), A Flight (6-10), B Flight (11-15) and C Flight (16-21).
Tournament format is gross stroke play, with USGA rules in effect. A software program tracks each player’s handicap to ensure participants are placed in their proper flight. Once you begin playing on tour the integrity of each flight is kept and many players will be moved up in flights during the season. Last season over 50 players were moved up a flight due to there improve play on tour.
Local tour director Dennis McCormac has assembled a schedule of 20 tourneys on some of the area’s premier courses. In addition to the opening and closing venues, tour stops include: Club at Irish Creek, Cabarrus CC, Rock Barn (Jones), Carolina Lakes, Statesville CC, Catawba Spring CC, Edgewater and River Hills CC. All events take place on Saturdays.
“The tour provides everyday golfers a chance to compete like the pros,†said McCormac. “You don’t have to be a scratch golfer to join the egolf Amateur Tour.â€
At each event, the top four golfers in every flight win gift certificates from Edwin Watts Golf, while all participants earn points toward a season-long championship in their flight.
Golfers may join the tour at any time for an $80 membership fee. That fee includes a gift bag and tour packet, and allows members to play in all the Charlotte tournaments, as well as other egolf AGT events around the country.
Entry fees for Charlotte tournaments range from $75-$95. Those fees include cart and green fees, range balls and prizes, plus closest-to-the-pins. Results and points standings are posted within 48 hours at: www.amateurgolftour.net. The 2008 season was the largest ever with over 300 players competing on tour. Don’t delay in signing up as most of the early tournaments sold out a week in advance. Close to 100 players compete at every tournament, and each flight usually has at least 25 participants.
Golfers who finish in the top 10 in points in their flight receive invitations to the 2009 egolf Amateur Tour National Championship, Oct. 24-25 at Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, S.C. Over 600 players from 32 cities and 15 states will compete for the 36 hole event. It is the second largest amateur tournament in the country behind the World Am held in Myrtle Beach.
