Fox Den CC eGolf Amateur Tour winners.
Another wet course where we had to play lift, clean & place everywhere! Thanks to the staff at Fox Den CC on getting the course in the best shape we have seen for several years despite all the rain this week.
Congrats also goes out to Joe Jaspers shooting a 3 under par total of 71-71=143 in his bid for qualifying for the US Open at Hawks Ridge in Atlanta. Joe started his round double bogeying his first hole and then came back with three birdies. His second round also included a double bogey on the same hole (#10) but then bounced back with five birdies in the afternoon. Jaspers finished tied for 18th on the toughest set up the USGA puts out all year on its qualifiers. Jaspers now competes this weekend in the NC Am along with Andy Price, John Sadri and Chase Wilson.
Championship Flight:
Lance Waggener started his day like all the rest of us par, bogey, par, birdie and remained even par until he hit a one iron on the par five 8th hole to about 15 feet. Waggner calmly step up and drain the putt for an eagle 3. On number nine Waggner almost made his birdie putt but left it just short right in jaws. Then began the birdie fest on the back nine. After paring 10, he two putted the par 5 11th and then made birdies at 13,15,16 and 17. Standing on the18th tee Lance knew he could tie the course record of 64 with a birdie. As he had done all day knocked it on the green to within 20 feet but his bid for birdie fell just short but posted 65 with 34-31 on the inward nine. The only bad thing about Lance’s round was that I was in his group betting against him, Yikes.
A Flight:
Jon Evans won last year at Fox Den with a 79 and defended his title with his best round ever on tour and even par 72. John had 4 birdies to go along with four bogies on the day. Chad Ballard continues to stretch his points lead by finishing in second place with a strong 77. Travis Palmer cashed for the first time this season finishing in third place with 78. Mark Day, Danny Lippard and Don Bridges all finished at 80, with Day beating them out on the card for 4th place.
B Flight:
Mark Hawkins continued his great play in B flight and received a promotion to A Flight for the rest of the season. Hawkins fired a strong 74 on Saturday beating out two other players by three shot. Good luck in A Flight Mark we know your ready for the new challenge. Dean Hearn and Chris Bolick both shot a pair of 77’s but it was Hearn getting second and Bolick third on the card playoff. Rounding out the top four was Terry Upright with 78, just beating out Geof Smith and Jimmy Chapman who had 79’s.
C Flight:
I had just announced to be ready for a playoff in C flight with only one group left to turn in there card. However that last group had the low score of the day. Christian Casper carded a smooth 81 for his first tour victory of the season. Even though Casper played a great round tour vet Richard Marazza said it was all his doing. The last four tourneys’ that Marazza has played in the winner has come from his group. Richard will put his pairing out to bid this week if you want to win at Catawba Springs. Maurice Mack and Chris Jenkins finished tied at 82, but Mack got Jenkins on the card for 2nd. Rounding out the top 4 spots was Allen Hagen at 83.
Remember we play this Saturday at Catawba Springs the (Fox Run and Sulphur Springs) nines.
Champ & A will play the Blue Tees and B & C flight will play the Whites.
