Kiawah Klash, Oak Point Golf Course
The Charleston Tour ventured down to Kiawah for their first
part of the Kiawah series on March 21.
Even with the world events as they are, we had our largest one day event
of the season with 65 players participating on a beautiful Spring day. The
weather and the course were both in awesome shape.
The Championship flight had nine guys competing for the top
spot and they did not disappoint. They
had no less than five guys on top of the leaderboard all day. Chris Asbel kept it steady and fired a one
over par 73 for a three-shot victory over Anthony Hughes of Myrtle Beach and
Wes Fennel of Hilton Head. There were
plenty of birdies and close play as spots 2 through 10 were separated by only 4
shots.
In the A flight Kevin Lyles continued his strong start of
the season with a one-shot victory over Glenn Powell. Kevin played steady and seemed to make par
from everywhere for his first victory in the A flight with a very nice round of
75. Glenn Powell (76) had a costly bogie
on Hole 16 but held on to finish one up on both Fred Dixon and Biff Huff who
both tied for third with rounds of 77 with Fred taking third place on the
scorecard playoff.
The B flight saw our largest margin of victory with Billy
Hill firing a round of 77 which included a nice eagle 3 on the par five 4thhole for his first win on the tour. John
Robinson and John Saager both posted solid rounds of 81 to tie for second place
with John Robinson taking home second place on the scorecard playoff with a
very nice 38 on the back nine to Saager’s 41.
In the C flight, Julie Johnson fired a very nice round of 84
for a three-shot victory over Robert Valencia (87). Robert edged out newcomer Matt Gibson by a
single shot to take home second place honors.
The D flight also saw a first-time winner as Larry Penfield
played a very solid round and posted a solid round of 88 for a 2-shot victory
over Charlies Cook whose double on 17 was the difference. There was a 3-way tie for third place with Aaron
Chase, Johnnie Cooper and Mike Miller all firing rounds of 91. Mike took third
place honors on the scorecard playoff.
Overall, it was a great day as everyone did their best to
keep with the social distancing while enjoying the beautiful day. Our next event
is the Battle of I26 at Orangeburg Country Club on April 11. Please sign up
online as it is close to selling out.
