The Charleston Tour played Oak Pt on Sat Mar 16thin what turned out to be ideal golf conditions which seemed to benefit a few
players. The course was in great shape
and the greens speed will help us get ready for our big event in Orangeburg on
April 13.
In the Championship Flight, Bob Merryman played a steady
round of golf posting 38 on each side to cruise to a 6-shot victory over Russ
Hightower. Both of these gentlemen were playing in the first Golfweek Am tour
event and we hope to see more of them.
The A flight really came to play at Oak pt as the top six
golfers were separated by only 4 shots.
Randy Tame fired a smooth 76 to edge Columbus Ohio’s Nathan Strack by a
shot. Sean Kenneck and Andy Balao followed with rounds of 78 with Sean taking
the third place by virtue of a scorecard playoff (Back nine score 39/40).
The B flight saw another round in the 70’s as John Saager
carded a very nice round of 78 for a two-shot victory over Jerry Mast who
posted another nice round of 80. Tim Sumption, 82 rounded out the top three in
the B flight.
The C flight saw Lyn Rhode post his first victory in two
years as he fired a great round of 79 to edge out Tom Brady, 81, who was the
leader in the clubhouse until Lyn birdied hole 18. Al Meggett of Augusta was
edged out by Cooter Douglas by virtue of a scorecard playoff as the two both
posted nice rounds of 82.
The only thing people were wondering about the D flight was
by how many shots Mike Flanigan would win by as he posted a spectacular front
nine score of 39 to cruise to a four shot victory over Julie Johnson who posted
a nice round of 90. Craig Knowlton playing in his first Golf Week event rounded
out the top three with a round of 94.
