The
Charleston and Hilton Head tours gathered at Paris Island for their annual Memorial
Day salute on a not so ordinary day. The
once promising forecast turned for the worst as a low-pressure system developed
and sat in the low country, bringing rain, wind and much cooler temperatures. With the wind and rain, we were tempted to
postpone the event to a later date but the course informed us, that they can
hold up to quite a bit of rain and the wind is no issue, they have plenty of
it!! Once the players were out on the
course it was soon realized the only detriment to play would be the weather as
the course held up incredibly well and the greens rolled smooth and quick.
The Championship
flight had some highly regarded players with some impressive resume’s but in
these conditions, it was going to be a battle of will and desire. Lance Lacombe and Jeff Wong both got off to
solid starts by firing 38’s on the front nine.
As they turned to the back they were pretty much matching shot for shot
with the one difference being the short down wind tough playing 14th
hole. Lance made a very nice birdie
while Jeff lost a shot for a two-stroke swing which proved to be a large lead
to overcome on such a tough day. Lance
wound up not only winning but defending his title from last year. Rounding out
the top three was Lane Adams who finished one shot in back of Jeff.
The A flight
played very solid as a group but the one who played a little more solid than
the rest was Scott Ammons, who on the strength of two birdies fired a smooth
round of 80 for a two stoke victory. Dan
Wanner Held off matt Llyod for second place with a very nice round of 82 to
Matt’s 83.
The B flight
was quite a battle all day between Chase Green and Justin Miller. Chase got out to a lead by firing a front
nine 39 to Justin’s 42, Chase got a little shaky on the back but the front was
strong enough to carry him to victory by one shot, 82 to 83. Johnnie Cooper rounded out the top three with
a steady round of 85.
The C flight
had quite the battle between second and forth places but Taylor Duncan made
sure there was no question about first with a three-shot victory. Taylor’s 86 was a great round in these conditions,
the battle between 2-4th spots went as follows, Travis Carlisle (89)
edged out Julie Johns by a shot and she edged out David Deese by a shot as
well.
The D flight
had a tie between a player in the first group and a player in the last group! Mike Witledge and Carl Matlock both plated
strong rounds of 95 in these difficult conditions. Although Carl had a strong front nine, mike
matched his back none to Carls front and was rewarded by virtue of a score card
playoff, hos first victory ever on the Golf Week Tour.
