The Charleston Golf Week Amateur Tour took on the course at
Rivertown on Feb 27th and they couldn’t have asked for a better day for
golf although it was bitter sweet. The
Charleston Tour dedicated the Day to Jamy Gillan. Jamy did not loose his fight, he just passed
the battle on to us. The tour came together
and with the generous donations from Jesse Green, Tony Capehart, Tyler Martin,
Tom Brady, the tour director and Wes Flemming; we raised $700.00 which was
posted right away to Jamy’s go fund me page.
The Championship Flight was contended by 12 golfers, easily
the largest field in recent memory.
Chris Asbell jumped out to an early lead by making the turn at 4 under
par. The tough stretch of holes 11-13
grabbed him and just a slight stumble was all Jack Ellis needed as he played
the back nine in two under to secure his first victory of the year with a three
under par 69 Mike Cobb played a very
steady round and avoided any big numbers to finish tied with Chris and take
second place money by virtue of a scorecard playoff.
The A flight saw Sean Kenneck and Kevin Lyles battle it out
all day. The two were tied heading inton
the par 5 16th. Sean made a
par and Kevin made a crucial birdie to take the lead and earn his first victory
of the year with the one stroke victory 74-75.
Mark Ducker and Felipe Benalcazar both had very nice rounds of 77 to
finish tied for third with Mark’s back nine score of 38 to Felipe’s 40 earned
him the third place finish.
The B flight was a battle all the way as Biff Huff and Jesse
Green went stroke for stroke. The two were tied heading into the par 5 16thhole and Biff birdied it to go one shot up on Jesse. Jesse answered on hole 17 with a very nice
birdie. The two both parred 18 and
settled it in sudden death. Biff took
advantage of the unique par 4 first hole and rolled in a 16 foot birdie to earn
his first victory of the year. Rounding
out the top three was steady John Saager with a smooth 81 playing virtually
with one eye!
The C flight saw Jack King gain his first victory of the
year with a very nice round of 87 to post a two shot victory over Julie Johnson
who posted a very nice round of 89 to edge Lyn Rhode by a single shot.
The D flight had the round of the day as Tyler Martin posted
his career best round of 85 to secure an eight shot victory. Bill Northrop, Dan Davidson and Columbia’s
Ken Johnson played in the flight for second place with all three posting nice
rounds of 93,94 and 95 respectively to round out the top four.
