The Charleston and Columbia tour’s held their annual “Golf
Week Masters” event at Orangeburg Country Club on April 13th. As usual the course was in great shape and
there was some spectacular golf played across all five flights.
In the Championship Flight the top four golfers were
separated by 2 shots. Hilton Head’s
Steve French came from behind on the back nine to take a one stroke victory
over Charleston’s Chris Pond who had one of the day’s two Eagles on hole
11. Augusta’s Brian Quackenbush and
Columbia’s Mathew West who had the other Eagle on Hole 8, both finished 2 shots
back with Brian winning the scorecard playoff.
The A flight was also very competitive as six golfers
finished with in two shots of each other.
Mike Griggs and Glenn Powell both fired a 78 and proceeded to hole one
for an on-course sudden death playoff.
Mike took all the drama out of it by making a birdie on the first hole
to claim the victory. Sean Kenneck, Austin Goode and Andy Balao all finished
one shot back and via a scorecard playoff finished in that order.
The B flight was not so dramatic as Ron Johnson fired a four
over par 76 for a two-shot victory over Beth Hunt who carded a very nice round
of 78. Byron Johnson and Jerry Mast both
finished tied for third with 81’s with Byron taking the scorecard playoff.
The C flight had Crys Peyton and joe Black fighting it out
all day with Joe taking over on the back with a nice 41 to pull ahead and earn
the two shot victory. Taimi Taala, Tom
Brady and Jimmy Mathis all finished in three-way tie for third with Taimi and
Tom edging Jimmy in the scorecard playoff.
The D flight saw a unique thing happen. Ron Johnson’s wife
Donna said whatever you can do, I can do too!! Donna Johnson ran away from the
field in the D flight by firing a smooth 84 for a 4 shot victory over Mike
Flanigan. Mike Casazza finished with a
91 to earn third place money with Julie Johnson posting a 92 for forth.
