Traveling down Sat morning it appeared the day may be a wash
or at least have several interruptions, but that wasn’t the case as the golf
gods looked favorably towards us and pushed the rain off the coast just in time
for us to start the tournament. It was
Cart Path Only but overall, the pace was OKAY, we really should be playing in
group in 4.5 hours max, especially at our next event at Orangeburg on April 8th. If you haven’t signed up for that, do so NOW
it will be sold out in a couple days! Now
to Golf;
In the Championship Flight Eric Hayes established an early
three shot lead over the field only to be caught on the back nine by tour veteran
Marty Bunch and the pair finished tied at 5 over par with Mike Cobb finishing
one shot out of the playoff. With the
first hole tied up they teed it up on the daunting 438 yard par 4 tenth
hole. Both hit successful drives and
reached the green in two, Eric safely in for par but then Marty stepped up and
drained the Birdie for his first win of the season and served notice to the
Champ flight to look out!
The A flight was also a battle all day with multiple people
on top of the leader board and seven people finishing within 3 shots of the
lead. Sean Kenneck, Tony Walters, and
Nick Callahan all finished with super rounds of 76 to tie for first place. The playoff was won by Sean who made a par on
the difficult hole while Tony and Nick both made a bogey. Tony won the scorecard playoff with a back
nine score of 38 to Nick’s 39. Finishing
a shot back Scott Kennedy and Justin Lippert tied with rounds of 77, both shot
39 on the back but Scott’s last six hole score of 27 was one better than Justin’s
28 so Scott grabbed the 4th place $$.
The B flight saw long time tour member Biff Huff and Andy
Weeks battle all day long, being in the same group they saw it first hand. Both shot nice rounds of one over par on the
front and then play the back almost identical as well so it came down to the
last hole for these two. Felling the pressure,
I am sure, neither was able to secure a par on the par five 18th but
Biff’s bogie was one better than Andy’s double and that was the difference! Rounding out the top four was Bo Gordon (82)
and Sean Metzger (83) who won the scorecard playoff over Chad Eldridge.
The C flight saw a repeat winner as Sam Marano, shot a nice
round of 85 to secure his second consecutive victory. Sam finished one shot in front of Coll Whip
Craig White and Nick Anderson who both fired rounds of 86 with Cool Whip
securing the 3rd place money with a scorecard playoff victory by
virtue of his back nine score of 41 to Nick’s 42.
The D flight saw another repeat winner from earlier in the
year as Cleve Johnson kept his steady play up by recording a very nice round of
87 for an 8-shot victory over Dean Hill with Michael Miller rounding out the
top 3.
The Closest to the pin winners saw a unique thing happen,
Ron Cosgrove had hit it in close and Chad Eldredge also hit it close, the
measurement was taken 4 times by 4 people and it was determined it was a tie so
they each split the 70. The other
winners were Glenn Eagerton, Hole 6, Sean Metzger hole 12 and Tim Parrish hole
16.
