On a hot and sticky Sunday afternoon, 52
golfers, with 8 players visiting from three different tours, tee it up at
Oldfield Country Club. Severe weather made for a long day, as play had to be
halted for an hour and a half. All groups did eventually finish but for three
flights, 18 holes would prove not to be enough.
The Championship flight saw battle all day
between Wesley
Fennel and Jeff
Wong. Wesley Fennel birdied 18 to force a play off with Jeff Wong
with both players finishing one over par (73). The battle continued in the
playoff which took five extra holes. Jeff Wong birdied the fifth playoff hole
to take the top spot. Third and fourth place saw a scorecard playoff
as two players tied at 76. Bob Engler took 3rd, while Gerry Pascale took 4th.
A flight also saw an on course playoff between
Joseph Combs and Andres Lopez both shooting 80 for the day. After two holes,
Joseph Combs takes home the trophy and his first win in A flight after his
recent promotion. Eric Maland took third place with a respectable
82.
In the B flight, 18 holes was enough to
determine a winner. Joshua Keisler took 3rd place with 86. Jordan Phillips
shoots 84 for second. Consistent play of 41-41 (82) was key to John Robinson's
first victory in over a year.
With daylight quickly fading, C Flight decided
to have a three man playoff. Brian Bright, Shannon Osbourne and guest Ryan
Combs all shot 84 for the right to play a little extra golf. It took two extra
holes to determine a winner. Brian Bright finished 3rd after being
eliminated from playoff after the first hole. Shannon Osbourne takes second
after an errant tee shot on the second playoff hole. Ryan Combs takes the win
and testing his putting skills in near complete darkness.
The competition wasn't nearly as tough in D
flight, which saw Paul Baker cruise to victory with 107.
The next stop for the Hilton Head-Savannah tour
is on August 17th at the always challenging Hilton Head National. Be sure to
sign up early as this event should be a sellout.
