"D" Flight Winners- Andrew Dart,Steve Cale and Steven Smith
The EGOLF AMATEUR TOUR held THE UPSTATE GOLF SERVICE first REGIONAL MAJOR Saturday, June 28 and Sunday June 29th. The two-day / two-course format was a new experience for our tours and provided a very strong, competitive field in all flights, “Similar to The Tour Finals†quoted Roger Mitterling Tour Director.
This event, with 142 players is the largest amateur golf event held in the Western Carolinas region, exceeding last years Upstate Tour Finals by over a dozen. The two courses, Willow Creek and Verdae Greens, both near Greenville, SC, are very different in design and character. Willow Creek has a wonderful lay out, with wide fairways and the smooth greens were in very good condition. Verdae Greens is much tighter and requires precise shot making. The weather was hot and humid with temperatures in the low 90’s with moderate, sometimes gusty winds. The pace of play was good and the players had a good time. The course staffs did a great job with the events at both courses. There were numerous scorecard play-offs for finishing positions but only one for the “A†Flight win.
Jody Clary of Grover, SC shot 154 to take the Championship Flight. David Vick of Gatlinburg, TN took second in a scorecard playoff with Shane Thompson of Canton, NC. Both players finished at 155. Other certificates winners were Mark Cook, Kevin Arnold, Keith Willis, Danny Garrison, Jeff Jefferson, and Matt Metz.
Daryl Cook of Boone, NC earned the “A†Flight honors over Doug Newton of Forest City, NC in a play-off. Both players carded scores of 157. Ron Hyatt from Simpsonville, SC. placed third with a 159. Other certificate winners were Dharmik Naik, Barry Taylor, Mickey Shaine, James Kelly, Adam Shealey, Jim Morgan, and Don Thompson.
Christopher Tomey from Spartanburg, SC scorched the field in “B†Flight with a 148. Bobby Callahan of Forest City, NC placed second in a scorecard play-off over Curtis Bass of Rock Hill, SC. Both players finished with 155 totals. Other certificate winners were Steven Traynam, Ron Hensley, Tony Higgins, Tim Sumption, Andy Murrow, Chris Moffat, Darin Darnell, and Roger Vanderford.
John Holland from Cashiers, NC captured the “C†Flight with a 170. Jason Brisini took second in a scorecard play-off over Tim Peele of Columbia, SC. Both players carded scores of 171. Other certificate winners were Bill Ritch, Shawn Colin, Bill Mabry, John Donat, Mike Rush, Gene Burgess, George Russell, Brenda Hoyle, and Richard Cairns.
Andrew Dart from Hilton Head held on to take “D†Flight honors with a score of 171. Steve Cale of Greenville, SC took second with a 173 and Steven Smith of Taylors, SC finished in third. Other certificate winners were Timothy Riordan, Matt Armstrong, Leslie Kress, Gary Bott, Danny Morris, Mike Chastain, Dean Teal, and Chip Bentley.
